Elijah Asilaua is the Premier of the Malaita Province of the Solomon Islands.[1] He was elected in May of 2024, and
has been serving as Premier ever since.[2]
Career and Government Role
[edit]In 2023, prior to becoming Premier of the Malaita Province, Asilaua was elected to the Ward 11 seat of the Provincial Assembly Administration.[2]
As Premier, Asilaua has spoken about several issues concerning the development of the Solomon Islands. In February of 2025, he promoted government-backed development projects in Malaita.[3] These projects spanned large areas of the province, including Small Malaita, an island and constituency. Since then, Small Malaita has developed its infrastructure capabilities through the acquisition of construction machinery.[4]
Asilaua has been involved in China-Solomon Islands relations, partly because Malaita and China have a close relationship. In 2025, Asilaua visited China as a delegate of the Province. There, he met Cai Weiming, Chinese Ambassador to the Solomon Islands.[5] In June of 2026, delegates of the Jiangsu Province gave Malaita machinery and supplies, which Asilaua thanked them for.[6]
In 2024, Asilaua met with Rod Hilton, Australia's High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands.[7][8] After this, Australia helped fund repairs on roads in Malaita.
Asilaua opts to collaborate with the Solomon Islands government in many issues, such as education, health, and the economy. He believes that the government should work with stakeholders.[9]
Personal Life
[edit]Asilaua received an education at Waimapuru National Secondary School[2], a high school on the Makira island.[10] When not pursuing an education or a career, Asilaua went to the South Evangelical Church and participated in community service.[2]
