Gunner Jaysley Beck was a British Army soldier who died by suicide at Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire in December 2021, aged 19.[1][2][3] She was originally from Oxen Park in Cumbria.[4] Her death came five months after she had been sexually assaulted by Michael Webber, who was then a Battery Sergeant Major, during a training exercise at Thorney Island in July 2021.[3][4][5] In October 2025, Webber was jailed for six months for sexually assaulting Beck.[3][1][6] An inquest concluded that the Army's failure to take appropriate action following her complaint "more than minimally" contributed to her death.[2][5] In January 2026, two serving officers in her chain of command, Major James Hook and Colonel Samantha Shepherd, were charged and to face courts-martial with conduct prejudicial to good order and service discipline over their handling of the case.[1][6][5]
