The Missionaries of the Holy Family (Latin: Congregatio Missionariorum a Sacra Familia; MSF) are a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded in 1895 in Grave, the Netherlands, by Father John Berthier. The congregation was established to promote missionary vocations and to serve the pastoral needs of families and communities. It received pontifical approval in 1911 by Pope Pius X.[1]
Description
[edit]The Missionaries of the Holy Family are a religious institute of priests and brothers. Their spirituality is centred on the Holy Family of Nazareth — Jesus, Mary, and Joseph — as a model for Christian life and family life.
The congregation's apostolic activities include pastoral ministry, missionary work, vocation promotion, and ministry to families. Its members serve in parishes, missions, seminaries, retreat centres, and other pastoral institutions in different parts of the world.[2]
History
[edit]The Missionaries of the Holy Family were founded in 1895 in Grave, the Netherlands, by the French priest Fr. Jean Berthier (1840–1908).[3] Berthier established the congregation with the aim of providing religious and pastoral formation for men who wished to become priests, particularly those from working-class and missionary backgrounds.
The congregation gradually expanded beyond the Netherlands and established communities and missions in other parts of Europe and overseas. During the 20th century, its members became involved in parish ministry, missionary work, education, and pastoral service to families.[4]
Today, the Missionaries of the Holy Family continue their religious and pastoral activities in several countries, with a particular focus on family ministry, evangelization, and missionary service.[5]
