Nathaniel Reid (born March 23, 1980) is an American pastry chef and the chef-owner of Nathaniel Reid Bakery in Kirkwood, Missouri.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Nathaniel Reid was born in Alton, Illinois on March 23, 1980, and was raised in Ellington and Farmington, Missouri.[1][2] He developed an early interest in natural sciences and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he initially studied biology.[3]
While working as a line cook to help pay for school, he found his passion for baking and pastry and changed his major to hotel and restaurant management with a minor in biology.[4] After graduating, he moved to Paris, France and received his Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu[5] before returning to the United States to start his professional career.
Career
[edit]After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Reid moved to Las Vegas, where he worked as a pastry cook at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas under chef Patrice Caillot.[6] He then worked under chef Joël Robuchon at both Restaurant de Joël Robuchon and L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, serving as sous chef. Reid subsequently became sous chef at The Mansion at MGM Grand.[1][7]
Later, Reid relocated to California to work at the St. Regis Monarch Beach under chef Stéphane Tréand, a recipient of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) distinction. He was promoted to executive pastry chef.[1]
During this time, Reid was invited to be a featured guest chef at the third annual Cirque Culinaire at The Peninsula Tokyo, an international food and wine extravaganza benefiting Make-A-Wish Japan.[8]
In 2010, he moved to Fort Myers, where he worked as a pastry chef for chef Norman Love at Norman Love Confections.[9]
Reid then returned to Missouri to serve as an executive pastry chef at the Ritz Carlton St. Louis in 2013.[1] He assisted with opening additional Ritz-Carlton properties, including the Ritz-Carlton Aruba,[10] while also consulting and teaching internationally for Valrhona[11] and Sasa Demarle.[12] He was featured on Norwegian broadcasting channel NRK for teaching a pastry class in Stavangar, Norway in 2016.[13]
Nathaniel Reid Bakery
[edit]
In August of 2016, Nathaniel and his wife Lee Lee Reid opened Nathaniel Reid Bakery in the Kirkwood suburb of St. Louis County, Missouri.[14]
The bakery is primarily grab-and-go with limited seating, and the menu includes seasonal varieties of croissants, pastries, tarts, macarons, sandwiches, and quiche.[15]
The bakery's double chocolate chunk brownie recipe was featured in Food & Wine[16] and Food & Wine Italia[17] in 2019. In 2025, the bakery was a James Beard Foundation award semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery.[18]
