Nurlan Bizakov (Kazakh: Нұрлан Бизақов; born February 1964) is a Kazakhstani businessman, racehorse owner and thoroughbred breeder. He made his fortune in the oil, finance and mining sectors in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and was listed by Forbes Kazakhstan among the country's wealthiest businesspeople between 2012 and 2020, reaching 11th place in 2017.[1] Since 2010 he has become a prominent figure in European horse racing as the owner of the Sumbe breeding operation, which comprises studs in England and France.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Bizakov was born in February 1964.[3] He was educated at the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute (now Satbayev University).[1]
Business career
[edit]Bizakov worked in the Kazakh oil, banking and industrial sectors during the 1990s and 2000s. He was a deputy chairman of the management board of Halyk Bank,[4] chairman of the management board of the Shymkent Oil Refinery (ShNOS), a founder of Neftebank and a member of the board of directors of Kazkommertsbank.[1]
Between 2007 and 2009 Bizakov divested his Kazakh and Kyrgyz business interests. In December 2009 his oil company Sumbe, which held licences to two oilfields in western Kazakhstan, was acquired by South Korea's state-run Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) for about US$335 million; KNOC took an 85 per cent stake while a Kazakh partner retained the remainder.[5][1] The purchase was one of six overseas acquisitions made by KNOC between 2009 and 2011 as it expanded its exploration and production portfolio.[6][7] In 2011 his company Summer Gold sold its 60 per cent stake in Altynken – the joint venture holding the licence to the Taldy-Bulak Levoberezhny gold deposit in northern Kyrgyzstan – to a subsidiary of China's Zijin Mining for US$66 million, with the state company Kyrgyzaltyn holding the remaining 40 per cent.[1][8][9] Forbes Kazakhstan estimated his net worth at US$445 million in 2017.[1]
Thoroughbred racing and breeding
[edit]Bizakov's first horses in Britain included Askar Tau, winner of the Group 2 Doncaster Cup and Lonsdale Cup.[10][11] In 2010 he purchased Hesmonds Stud in East Sussex, England, and developed it under stud manager Tony Fry.[2] He expanded into France in 2019 with the acquisition of Haras de Montfort et Préaux in Normandy, home to the sire Le Havre, and in 2021 added Haras du Mézeray.[2][12] In 2020 he united his British and French farms under a single name, Sumbe, after his birthplace in Kazakhstan.[2]
Horses owned or bred by Bizakov have won at the highest level. His homebred Belbek won the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère in 2022.[13] His homebred Lazzat won the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in 2024 in the Sumbe silks; sold privately to Wathnan Racing the following year, he went on to win the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2025, with Bizakov remaining his breeder.[11][14] In 2024 his miler Charyn won the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, Prix Jacques Le Marois and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, establishing himself as Europe's leading miler, and was sent to contest the Mile Championship in Japan.[11][15]
Bizakov has also assembled a stallion roster at Sumbe's French studs, both by retiring his own horses and by acquiring breeding rights to others. Charyn and Belbek were joined by Mishriff, whose stallion rights Bizakov bought from Prince Faisal in 2022 after the horse had raced in Faisal's colours, and by the Group 1-winning juvenile Angel Bleu, purchased in 2023.[13][16][11]
