Peter Lodwick (born February 9, 1944) is a Welsh composer and performing artist, born in Neath, Wales.[1] He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and has worked in Great Britain, USA and Norway.[2] Lodwick's works have been presented at festivals, including Avignon, Edinburgh, Dublin, Llangollen, Bergen and Oslo.[3]

Lodwick has written music for many plays, dance performances, choreographies and films, released four albums [4] and worked as a performing musician and teacher. [5] He is known for his improvisational skills.[6][7] He established himself in Norway in the 1970s. In 1974, Lodwick founded the performing arts group Brobyggere (Bridgebuilders).[8] In 1988, Lodwick further developed the company together with dancer and choreographer Marit Krogeide,[9] establishing Stage Productions, which was renamed Dans & Toner in 1996.[10] He married Krogeide in 1992.[11]

Biography

At a young age Lodwick performed as a pianist and cellist with the Glamorgan Youth Orchestra, Welsh National Youth Orchestra and sang with Glamorgan Youth Choir.[12] Glamorgan scholarships in piano, voice and cello led to studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After completing his studies, he joined the D´Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1965 and remained with the company until 1967. [13] Whilst on tour with the company in the United States, Lodwick met choreographer Martha Graham. He recalls that she encouraged him to compose for contemporary dance, an encounter that contributed to his later work with music for dance and movement.[14] [14] His work with composing for movement subsequently led to an invitation from Gunnar Brunvoll, the then director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, to come to Norway to teach electronic music. [14][15]

The next years Lodwick divided his time between Norway and Britain, working with choreographers of contemporary dance for BBC, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and projects in Norway.[14] He subsequently settled in Norway, where his work has included composition, performance and teaching. [4]

Theatre

In 1972, Lodwick composed and performed music for The National theatre's production of Karl Georg Büchner's Leonce and Lena,[16][17] directed by Edith Roger. He went on to compose music for several Norwegian theatre productions:

  • Experiment [18][19] by Stian Sørlie, National Travelling Theatre and Oslo New Theatre (1973)
  • Wars with words [20][21] by Arnulf Øverland, National Travelling Theatre (1975)
  • Bryn and Grønvold [22] by Thea Stabell, National Travelling Theatre (1976)
  • Little Eyolf [23] by Henrik Ibsen, National theatre (1978)
  • Around the world in 80 days [24][25] by Jules Verne, National Travelling Theatre (1978)
  • A boys happiness [26][27]by Else Michelet and Tor Arne Johnsen, Oslo New Theatre (1979)
  • 39 red stiches[28] by Inger-Margrethe Lunde, Black Box theatre (1992)

A cooperation with the Norwegian playwright Peder Wright Cappelen resulted in composition for his musical theatre works:

  • Trollspill [29][30], The National Travelling Theatre (1977), Chat Noir Theatre (1978)
  • Manndattera and Kjerringdattera,[31][32] The National Theatre (1977)
  • Hvittenland [33][34], The National Theatre (1981)

Film and television

Lodwick has composed music for the films Oss (1976),[35] directed by Laila Mikkelsen[36] [37]and Angst [38] (1976) directed by Oddvar Bull Tuhus[39][40]. The works Horizon and Of Cabbages and Kings with choreography by Jack Nightingale from London Contemporary Dance Theatre was created for BBC in 1971.[4] A cooperation with Margaret Ljunggren resulted in creating and performing in Amandus [41][4] (1980) – a series of 10 programs for children, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.

Dance

In 1971 Lodwick invited choreographer Irene Dilks to Norway and their work Point-Counterpoint [42] was presented at the Munch Museum and Henie Onstad Artcenter.

Other works to highlight are Poems [43], choreography by Jane Hveding, performed at Norwegian Theatre (1991), which led to the The Dance Critics’ Award [44]. In Collage Dance Company’s production of Pinocchio [45] [46] by Carlo Collodi, he composed and performed the music, as well as acting the role of Gepetto (1993). Music for Huldra at The Open Theatre with choreography by Hild Eikrann (1995). A longstanding cooperation with Lise Ferner included the works Lille Heidelberg and Three words at Månefisken (1993) [47] and Eva – stories about love (1994) [48] at The Open Theatre amongst others.

Brobyggere (Bridgebuilders)

In cooperation with dancer Solveig Hermo and actress Thea Stabell he founded the company Brobyggere in 1974.[49] The intention was to build bridges between different art forms, such as music, song, movement and text,[50], hence the company's chosen name. They performed the works, Us, Seagull and Triangel at the True Northern Arts Festival (1975) representing the Norwegian Opera and Ballet.[51] Gunnar Brunvoll, the manager of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, drafted a contract to include Brobyggere to be a touring company under the umbrella of the opera.[52] Circumstances unfortunately prevented this from happening.[49] Brobyggere continued to produce several performances involving various artists over the next years, including Hånd i hånd with Solfrid Heier.[53]

Dans & Toner

The collaboration with dancer Marit Krogeide (1986) led to the creation of Stage Productions in 1988. In 1996 they changed the name to Dans & Toner. [54][55] For 31 years the company toured Norway with 15 different productions, seen by hundreds of thousands of people. Lodwick composed and performed the music in all of them, including:

  • How about that mr. B? [56]
  • Dance for You[57]
  • Impulser[58]
  • Munch – a journey through dance, music & pictorial art[59]
  • You and I and the two of us[60]

and more.

The company’s work to spread new music and dance to a wider audience resulted in financial support from several Norwegian organizations, including annual support from Arts Council Norway (1994 - 1998).

Teaching

In the 1970s Lodwick developed his own rhythm and improvisation technique,[61]  a method to enhance performing artists understanding of dynamics and phrasing.The technique then became P.R.I.D.E : Practical Rhythm, Improvisation and Dynamic Exercises.[62] Part of the technique is published in Dans!, [63] Tell Forlag (1996). For many years, the technique was part of the curriculum at Oslo National Academy of the Arts; The Academy of theatre, [64] the academy of Opera [65] and The academy of Dance.[66] The technique also taught at the University of Leeds, the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Bårdar Academy and more. [67]
