Priyalal Sirisena (born 25 May 1979) is a Sri Lankan attorney-at-law and author who practices constitutional law and fundamental rights litigation in Sri Lanka.[1] In addition to his legal practice, he is a novelist whose literary work was shortlisted for the Swarna Pusthaka Awards.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Sirisena was born in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. He studied law at the University of Colombo, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 2004, and was subsequently admitted to the bar as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He later completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the same university.
Legal career and human rights petitions
[edit]Sirisena has been involved in constitutional law and human rights cases in Sri Lanka. In June 2018, he filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against senior police officers, alleging interference with his professional duties and rights as a legal counsel.[1]
In May 2023, Sirisena filed formal complaints regarding intimidation and threats related to his ongoing legal proceedings in Kurunegala, which received coverage in national print media.[3] He has also represented clients in public interest litigations concerning administrative oversight and police accountability.[1]
Literary career
[edit]Sirisena is also active in Sinhala literature. He authored the Sinhala novel Deyyange Atha (The Elephant of the Gods). In 2025, the novel gained critical recognition and was selected among the shortlisted nominees for the prestigious Swarna Pusthaka Awards, one of Sri Lanka's primary literary honors for novel writing.[2][4]
