Rugby league is a minor participation and spectator sport in Singapore. The sport is administered by the Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL), which oversees domestic competitions as well as the men's national team, the Memerang, and the women's national team, the Sunbirds.
Globally, the sport is governed by the International Rugby League (IRL).[1]
History
[edit]Early years and POW matches (1942)
[edit]Rugby league is believed to have first been played in Singapore during the early stages of World War II. The earliest documented matches took place in 1942, when inter-battalion seven-a-side rugby league competitions were held by Allied prisoners of war on the tennis courts at Adam Park.[2]
Reestablishment attempts (2003–2012)
[edit]Subsequent documented attempts to establish the sport in Singapore did not occur until 2003.[3] Another initiative was launched in 2012;[4] however, neither attempt successfully established a permanent domestic presence or governing body.
Formal establishment and international debut (2025–present)
[edit]The Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL) was formally established in 2025. In the same year, the governing body entered the Singapore men's national rugby league team, known as the Memerang (Otters), into the Asian Championship[5] hosted in Thailand. The Memerang won the tournament on their international debut. Following this international success, the SGNRL ran Singapore's first domestic rugby league competition in August 2026[6].
Governing body
[edit]The official governing body for the sport is the Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL). It was registered with the Singapore Registry of Societies under the name, Rugby Football League 2025 (Singapore), on April 2, 2026.
The organisation is responsible for the administration, development, and management of rugby league in Singapore, overseeing both domestic competitions and the men's and women's national teams.
Domestic competition
[edit]The inaugural Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL) Championship was held from August to September 2026.[7] The competition featured three teams: the Central Vipers, Eastern Hornbills, and Wanderers Tigers. The Tigers were established as an subsidary of the multi-sport Wanderers Rugby Football Club, which also competes in domestic rugby union and netball leagues.
All regular season matches were held at the TRC Kampong Java Field. The regular season consisted of a double round-robin format, after which the Eastern Hornbills and Wanderers Tigers qualified for the decider.
In the inaugural Grand Final, the Eastern Hornbills defeated the Wanderers Tigers 20–18 to claim the premiership.[8]

National teams
[edit]Men's national team
[edit]The Singapore men's national rugby league team is nicknamed the Memerang (Malay for "Otter").[9] The side is coached by former Australian professional rugby league footballer Dane Campbell.
The team made its international debut at the 2025 Asian Championship held in Manila, Philippines. In their opening match, the Memerang defeated Japan 48–4 before defeating hosts Philippines 62–0 in the final to win the Asia Cup title.[10] In June 2026, Singapore embarked on its first Pacific tour to Port Vila, losing 30–24 to Vanuatu in a match played for international ranking points.[11]

Women's national team
[edit]The Singapore women's national rugby league team is known as the Sunbirds, coached by Phil Browne.[12]
The team made its international debut on 6 June 2026, playing a 9-a-side match against Vanuatu at Korman Stadium in Port Vila. The Sunbirds secured a historic victory in their inaugural match, defeating Vanuatu 30–16.[13]
