Zofia Lipecka

Zofia Lipecka (born 1957 in Łęczyca, Poland) is a French–Polish contemporary artist known for her work in painting, video installation, photography, and mirror-based conceptual pieces. Her practice explores themes of historical memory, landscape, ecological fragility, and the relationship between human societies and the natural world. She lives and works in Paris.

Early Life and Education

Lipecka was born in Łęczyca, Poland. She later moved to France, where she studied art history at the Sorbonne and painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her early work focused on the relationship between nature and human culture, often expressed through painting.

Artistic Development

Early Work

During the early stages of her career, Lipecka explored harmony between natural environments and human presence. She began incorporating mirrors, photography, and video into her practice, expanding beyond traditional painting.

New York Period

Lipecka spent two years in New York, where she developed a more conceptual approach to installation and video work.

Memory and Holocaust-Related Projects

In 2001, Lipecka encountered historical accounts of the Jedwabne pogrom, which influenced her subsequent work on memory and historical responsibility. She created After Jedwabne (2002), a video installation addressing the event. In 2004, she began the Treblinka Project, a long-term series examining the landscape of the Treblinka extermination camp and its role as a witness to violence.

Recent Work

Since the 2010s, Lipecka’s work has increasingly addressed ecological themes, climate change, and the future of planetary environments. Her recent paintings and installations often depict solitary figures, symbolic landscapes, and environmental tension.
