Volume I, Issue 1, September 1, 2026 ←(Previous issues) · 1 · 2 → The Monthly Wiki-Weather Review This is the first edition for what will hopefully be a monthly newsletter involving Wikipedia's weather articles, including the severe weather and tropical cyclones projects. The newsletter aims to provide in summary the recent activities and developments of the WikiProject. Featured Content Since the beginning of 2026, the following featured articles were promoted: Hurricane Camille Hurricane Frances Hurricane Joaquin Timeline of the 1996 Pacific hurricane season Timeline of the 1997 Atlantic hurricane season Timeline of the 1998 Pacific hurricane season Timeline of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season Timeline of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season Development, Reminders, and Updates After a recent edit war and subsequent discussion, tropical cyclone season articles should only be updated when advisories are officially released, and not to use the ATCF In an attempt to limit edit wars over tropical cyclone images, the image guidelines were updated, allowing for images to be within 12 hours or 10 knots of peak intensity. The WikiWeather Notability guidelines has been updated, although discussion continues about individual vs. tornado outbreak articles and how to handle annual tornado articles. The NCDC Storm Events database recently updated, which changed all URL's. Although Eoline (talk · contribs) changed most of them, there might be some old ones that still need to be fixed. Series of weather topics that need expansion The following articles are the earliest in a series of lists/articles, and including the gap going back to the previous entry in the series. These are articles that need to be written. 1850 Atlantic hurricane season - every Atlantic hurricane season article from 1850 to 2024 is rated good article or better, but the 1840s Atlantic hurricane seasons is start-class 2007–08 North American winter - there is a 90-year gap between Winter of 1917-18 to 2007-08 2020 droughts and heat waves - there are yearly heat wave lists for 2018 and 2020-2023, but not 2024-present 2023–24 Asian winter - there are only three yearly Asian winter articles List of United States tornadoes from January to February 2007 - there is a four-year gap between Jan-Apr 2003 US tornadoes to 2007, and a three-year gap going back to Jan-Feb 2000. Weather of 2000 - there is a 14-year gap between Weather of 1985 and 2000, and another gap of 39 years going back to 1946 Tornadoes of 1946 - there is a four-year gap between Tornadoes of 1942 and 1946, and another gap of 14 years going back to 1928 Tropical cyclones in 1991 - there is a 13-year gap between Tropical cyclones in 1978 and 1991; 1977 TC yearly list also exists Of note, the yearly "Weather of YYYY" could be a useful parent article for every weather article. For a well-written (and well-sourced) example, see this timeline in the Weather of 2023 article. Image of the month Devastating floods, possibly caused by a glacial collapse, hit the China–Nepal border on August 26. These floods destroyed numerous settlements and killed over 1,000 people (with thousands still missing). The above image is a Landsat 9 view of debris flow from the floods. Selected new articles The following articles were written/published this year. A discussion in December 2025 talked about articles for fish storms or were otherwise had minor impacts. As Hurricane Noah summarized, "if a storm isn't being discussed after the fact for meteorological notability and impacts were minor or nil, there shouldn't be an article. Since then, 8 featured articles and 76 good articles have been merged. In a recent AFD, Quxyz mentioned their own minimum threshold for a tropical cyclone article (1,000 words and 20,000 bytes). Help requested for specific topics There are a few ongoing projects that are needed in Wiki-Project weather, separate from any requested articles. After years of discussion on standardizing the colors for tropical cyclone tracks, there is an ongoing project to replace the roughly 2,200 track maps across the hundreds of storm/season articles. One of the members helping with the track maps, 2003 LN6 (talk · contribs), estimated that "about 15–20% of the historic track maps are recolored properly, but progress is being made. I have personally been working on the North Atlantic tracks, but I have observed the work of many others as well." Another member working on older Atlantic and season track maps, JasonHo1222 (talk · contribs), asked, "can I be quoted in the newsletter too?" Thanks to 2003 LN6, JasonHo1222, and all of the other users helping with this task. The tropical cyclone season button bars have outdated coding that should ideally be replaced. The talk page goes into detail, but basically swapping out two parts of the template ("List of storms" and "Statistics" sub-articles, which we don't have anymore) in favor of the yearly "Weather of YYYY" and "Tropical cyclones in YYYY" articles. List of tropical cyclones producing snow - inspired by the recent Hurricane Lala that produced snowfall in Hawaii, there is a consensus that such an article could be useful. Comments or suggestions?
