Etymology

Coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl based on Polish żarłok (glutton). Analyzable as žral +‎ -ok. From žrát (eat). First attested in the 19th century. Compare typologically names for wolverine: Bulgarian лакомец (lakomec); Serbo-Croatian žderonja, ждеравац (cognate via Proto-Slavic *žьrati).
