Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based on Chichewa Maláŵi (“Malawi”). The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is unknown.
The name is traditionally explained from Chichewa malaŵí (“flames”). In Chewa oral tradition, Malawi was the name of an area around the lake, which was said to resemble flames or a mirage when viewed from the surrounding highlands. Early Portuguese sources rendered the name as Maravj or Maravy, whence the conventional name Maravi for the precolonial state in the region. The modern country adopted the name Malawi when it became independent in 1964, replacing the colonial name Nyasaland.
Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Malawi, Danish Malawi, Swedish Malawi, German Malawi, Dutch Malawi and English Malawi.
Pronunciation

[edit]Malawi
- Malawi; a country in Southern Africa, Africa, along Lake Malawi, with Lilongwe as its capital.
- Familien bodde flere år i Malawi før de flyttet til Zambia. ― The family lived in Malawi for several years before moving to Zambia.
- 2026 June 25, Bjørn Johannessen, “Malawi”, in Store norske leksikon[3]:
- Malawi er en republikk i det sørlige Afrika.
- Malawi is a republic in Southern Africa.
Usage notes
[edit]- The official Norwegian long-form name is Republikken Malawi (“the Republic of Malawi”).
- Before independence in 1964, the territory was known under British rule as Nyasaland.
