Etymology
[edit]Internationalism, based ultimately on Slovene Slovẹ́nija (“Slovenia”). The country is named after the Slovenes. The ethnonym Slovẹ́nec (“Slovene”) continues Proto-Slavic *slověninъ (“Slav”) and is probably related to *slovo (“word”), though its deeper origin remains uncertain.
Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Slovenia, Faroese Slovenia, Finnish Slovenia, Icelandic Slóvenía, Danish Slovenien, Swedish Slovenien, German Slowenien, Dutch Slovenië, Polish Słowenia, Romanian Slovenia and English Slovenia.
