Late 16th century, either from Middle French anagramme or Latin anagramma,[1] formed on Ancient Greek ἀνά (aná, “up, back”) + γράμμα (grámma, “letter”). Analyzable as ana- (“up, back”) +‎ -gram (“letter”).
