Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from English tractor, from Latin tractor (“one who draws, puller”), an agent noun from Latin trahō (“to pull, draw”), via the perfect passive participle stem tractus (“drawn, pulled”). First attested in 1918 in Norwegian, as plural traktorer.
The English vehicle sense arose from the idea of a machine that draws or pulls loads, especially agricultural implements.
Compare Norwegian Nynorsk traktor, Danish traktor, Swedish traktor, and German Traktor (“tractor”).
