The scale of the clinical problem combined with the multifarious nature of the pathologic mechanisms make novel molecular mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction a major target for ongoing basic and translational research.

Ischemic stroke results from the blockage of a cerebral artery that leads to loss of oxygenation in downstream brain tissue, ultimately resulting in neuronal cell death and irreversible neurological deficit. This report from the American Heart Association estimates an incidence of 691,000 acute ischemic strokes yearly in the US. Despite this number, only a small percentage of stroke patients actually receive the benefit of acute intervention {1}.
