About this console

Entex's Select-A-Game released in 1981 is the second handheld console with interchangeable cartridges. Instead of using pixels to make the display like Microvision and modern handheld consoles, Select-a-game uses LED lights. Also it doesn't have a CPU. Instead the CPU was build in each individual cartridge, like Microvision. Maybe Entex wanted to minimize the cost of the console and increase the price of the games. The console has two sets of buttons, one in each side of it and includes four directional buttons along with three input buttons, four total of foot team buttons on the unit. Most games come with overlays to explain what the lights are supposed to be.

There is only 6 games released for this console and 2 unreleased. Space Invader 2, which is built in the console and is the most famous one, Basketball 3, Football 4, Pinball, Baseball 4, Pacman 2, Battleship (not released), Turtles (not released).

  • Select-A-Game discontinued in less than a year

  • Entex discontinued Select-A-Game in favor of Adventure Vision

  • Uses four C Batteries as a power source

  • There is a dedicated ac adapter created for Select-A-Game

  • Entex was sued by Coleco, which held the licensing rights to handheld versions of Pac-Man at the time
