Hello Community,

I'm facing an issue with my GitHub Copilot subscription.

I initially started using Copilot under the free trial and really liked the experience. After the trial ended, I purchased the annual subscription for $100 (one-time payment). It worked well for a while, and I had access to premium models like GPT-4, GPT-4.1, GPT-4o, and Claude Sonnet 3.7.

However, after some time, I noticed that these premium models were no longer available. Eventually, even the standard Copilot functionality degraded, and when I checked my Copilot settings page, it showed that I’m on the Free plan with no active subscription.

This has been ongoing for many days now and is significantly affecting my productivity, especially since I rely on Copilot daily for development work.

I have already paid for a full year. Let me know if any of you is facing the same issue. I raised two tickets in support but there's no update from GitHub side.

I’ve seen a few people mention similar issues where Copilot reverts to the Free plan even after a valid payment. If you’ve already submitted a support ticket and haven’t heard back, here are a few things to try while waiting:

1. Check your billing status here: https://github.com/settings/billing
   Make sure the subscription shows as “active” and tied to the correct GitHub account.

2. Try signing out and back in on both GitHub and your editor (VS Code or JetBrains).

3. Clear GitHub sessions in your IDE:

   • In VS Code: Ctrl+Shift+P → GitHub: Sign out, then sign back in.
   • Delete any saved tokens if needed.

4. Check your Copilot subscription settings:
   Go to https://github.com/settings/copilot and verify the subscription status.

If everything looks correct and the problem still persists, the only option is to wait on GitHub Support. I’d recommend replying to your open ticket to bump it. You might also try tagging @githubsupport on X (Twitter) if it’s urgent.

If your subscription shows as inactive but you’ve already paid, it’s likely a backend issue with the billing system or subscription sync between your GitHub account and Copilot.

Here’s what you can try in the meantime:

Things to Check:
GitHub Copilot Billing Page
Go to https://github.com/settings/billing and confirm whether the annual payment went through and which plan is currently active.

Copilot Subscription Page
Visit https://github.com/settings/copilot to double-check if it still shows “Free” or reverts to “Pro” or “Individual.”

GitHub Support Tickets
Since you already raised support tickets — that’s the right step. If you have the ticket numbers, you can reply on one of them again to bump it for attention. Sometimes it takes a few business days to hear back.

Check for Multiple Accounts
Make sure the email/account that purchased Copilot is the same one you’re logged into — sounds basic, but a few folks I know ran into this exact issue due to switching GitHub accounts by mistake.

GitHub Status Page
Occasionally, Copilot services or billing systems may have outages. You can check https://www.githubstatus.com/ to rule that out.

I am having this exact same issue. Did it resolve for anyone else? How do you contact GitHub support? I have asked for a refund on from my bank.

Just got the same issue after paying for an annual subscription. The bank account has been charged, I received the receipt, but I'm on the Free plan.

Vscode workarounds didn't help as I'm still on the free plan.

Upd: it haven’t resolved since then. My ticket got ignored. GitHub just eaten up my $100.

I had the same issue but found a solution. I have 2 Github accounts: 1 for personal, 1 for work. The docs make it seem as though all you need to do is click the preferences icon for Copilot in VS code, you'll know you're signed in successfully after you see the subscription info on the github.com/settings/copilot/features page.

That WAS NOT the case for me. I was still seeing 'CoPilot Free' at the top of the component.
