github is not the holy grail nor twitter is, as reaction microsoft bought github i would rather login with gitlab than with github.
even better would be, if you handle user login directly on your site.
Hey @c33s, thanks for the feature request. We're focusing on open sourcing right now, and also want to give some more thought and consideration for which login options we'd like.
Now that open-sourcing is done, what better time to capitalize on your new commitment to open-source than by lending your prestige a moral support to an open-source company: GitLab!

I think this isn't so good. From a devtoer (is that a thing) point of view, it just means one more thing to worry about that isn't awesome content/features.
Let's not store passwords, and have to manage the whole security problems that comes with it. Let's just rely on other services who have a lot more energy to put into security to do that for us.
That said, I'd be glad to help out with GitLab oauth 🙂

if you want something to be done good, learn it and do it yourself. at least this is my experience. only because they are big, they are not more secure. even facebook was not save.
Thanks for contributing to this issue. As it has been 90 days since the last activity, we are automatically closing the issue in 7 days. This is often because the request was already solved in some way and it just wasn't updated or it's no longer applicable. If this issue still requires attention, please respond with a comment. Happy Coding!
I would also prefer an option to log in with my GitLab account. GitHub is closed source and proprietary, and not in line with the ideals of dev.to/forem, in my opinion.
Hey @SynergyBest sorry for the delayed response I was on vacation for about a week.
I brought this topic up to our new product team to get a clearer answer on this feature request.
They let me know that we are currently working on a feature called Forem Passport. This is an authentication method that they are currently developing. It will allow you to create a single Forem user that can be used across Forems (like DEV).
Essentially, it will allow us to have an email based auth-n method that is available in all Forems and will work across all Forems.
The reason we are starting here is to simplify our auth methods and lay the groundwork for future auth options.

@RafoxDev You could log in with a GH account since you have one, then link to GitLab from your profile.
