High accuracy in the determination of sugar content in the fruit could be obtained by multiple linear regression (MLR) using second derivative (D2) spectra in the 710–930 nm region. As a minimum, the four wavelengths mentioned below were needed as the predictor variables of the MLR equation. The D2 spectral change in the region of 900–910 nm was due to sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose). A wavelength range of 880–890 nm and a wavelength range of 900–910 nm were selected as the best pair. A wavelength range of 740–755 nm region or 840–855 nm region compensated for the different optical pathlength of each fruit. One of the wavelengths around 794 nm or 835 nm was needed to compensate for the influence of fruit temperature. The influence of vario...

Methods For the design of the vegetable reaper, an initial step involved the calculation of the resisting forces for blade movement. Determination of engine power and the pully size of the simple power transmission system were conducted based on knife speed and the required cutting power. To evaluate machine performance, three important performance variables including effective field capacity (EFC), cutting efficiency (CE), and plant damage (PD) were assessed under field conditions. In this evaluation, three variables of forward speed (0.8, 1.2, and 1.8 km/h), knife speed (3 and 4 m/s), and cutting height (3 and 5 cm) were assessed. Results The results indicated that the forward speed had a significant effect on all three performance variables of the machine. Although the highest EFC was achieved at a speed of 1.8 km/h, the optimum values of CE and PD were obtained at the forward speed of 0.8 km/h. A cutting height of 3 cm and a blade speed of 4 m/s were chosen for this machine. To have a continuous rotation of the star-wheels, 5 teeth star-wheel provided the best performance compared with other shapes. Conclusions Using the lightweight vegetable reaper can reduce the crushing or damaging of the roots or stems as well as easing the harvesting process compared to manual methods. Because the vegetable plots are very small and the machine could be moved by the operator, eliminating the gearbox greatly reduced the slippage of the driving wheels and reduced damage to the dedicated stems.

Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the performance of a cylinder-type vacuum precision seeder for sowing pea seed in small fields. The effects of vacuum pressure, speed of grease belt and diameter of seed hole were evaluated by examining the mean seed spacing, quality feed index, coefficient of seed distribution uniformity, and miss and multiple indices. The main variables were vacuum pressure (40, 60 and 80 mbar), grease belt speed (2.5, 5 and 7 km h-1) and seed hole diameter (3, 4 and 5 mm). The results indicated that the maximum performance of the metering device was founded at the vacuum pressure, grease belt speed and seed hole diameter of 60 mbar, 2.5 km h-1 and 4 mm, respectively. The miss index, multiple index, quality feed index, seed distribution uniformity coefficient and actual mean seed spacing were obtained as 10%, 5.54%, 84.46%, 79.87% and 11.94 cm, respectively. In the treatment of 3-40-7 (hole diameter (mm), vacuum pressure (mbar), and belt speed (km h-1), respectively), higher miss index caused higher mean seed spacing; this is while in the treatment of 5-80-2.5, higher multiple index caused lower mean seed spacing.

Precision farming is the best practice to approach these goals. For real time measurement of sugar beet yield, a yield monitor was developed, and installed on the exterior side of the harvester's chassis. The advantage of this arrangement over similar systems is the location of the load cell and system's frame which prevents blockage by trash, mud or plant roots. For measurement of weight, one load cell on each side of the harvester chassis was used. Conveyor and ground speeds were measured using two proximity sensors. Because vibrations of the harvester can affect the output signals, it is necessary to find the main bandwidth associated with the weights moving on the conveyor. For this purpose, three different masses were placed on the moving conveyor and this bandwidth was determined using signal processing. Then, a suitable filter was

In this study a total of 80 samples were used as the calibration set, whereas 40 samples were used for prediction. Three pre-processing methods, including Multiplicative Scatter Correction (MSC), first and second derivatives were applied to improve the predictive ability of the models. Models were developed using partial least squares and artificial neural networks as linear and nonlinear models, respectively. The correlation coefficient (R), sugar mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and SDR were the factors used for comparing these models. The results showed that NIR can be utilized as a rapid method to determine soluble solid content (SSC), sugar content (SC) and the model developed by ANN gives better correlation between predictions and measure...

In the process of hazelnut cracking, because of the different sizes and shapes of hazelnuts, many hazelnuts leave the cracking machine in the form of a cracked or closed-shell. The presence of cracked or closed-shell hazelnuts reduces the marketability of the product. Therefore, after the cracking operation, the separation of cracked or closed-shells from whole hazelnuts has largely been conducted by visual inspection, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and lacks accuracy. So, the purpose of this study was to use the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) algorithm to classify hazelnuts into two classes: open-shell and closed-shell or cracked hazelnuts. To compare the proposed method with pretrained DCNN models, three models including ResNet-50, Inception-V3, and VGG-19 were investigated. The results of the proposed model (accuracy of 98% and F 1 -score o...

The objective of this study was to evaluate a hand-held GreesnSeeker (GS) active remote sensing instrument to estimate NDVI and FVC in the spinach plant. In this study, the color indices of the G-B index and Excess Green (ExG) were used as color vegetation indices to discriminate leaves from soil background. During 28 to 44 days after emergence (DAG), the results showed good correlations between chlorophyll yield and NDVI (R = 0.61 to 0.91), and the correlation between NDVI of GS and biomass was significant. In addition, in this growth stage, the results showed a good coefficient of correlation between NDVI of GS and FVC (R = 0.67 to 0.82). In assessing the nitrogen rate on the NDVI of GS, the results showed significant differences only at the short period of growth stage (28 to 36 DAG). The results revea...

Challenges and Prospects of Precision Agriculture in Iran
Precision agriculture technology provides a way for adjusting production inputs based on the need... more Precision agriculture technology provides a way for adjusting production inputs based on the needs of individual areas within fields. Although precision farming (PF) infrastructures are acceptable in Iran, farmers' knowledge about PF is the main challenge for applying this technology. Most of farms in Iran are small, so the benefits of hard PF in these farms are not sufficient to justify the costs. Utilizing some low-cost and low technology tools such as chlorophyll meter and leaf color chart might be the best choices for Iran's small farms. Most of farmers are uneducated and are not familiar with PF; therefore, education is the first step for applying this technology. Because of water crisis and low watering efficiency, Variable Rate Technology and Wireless Sensor Network can be used to optimize agricultural water consumption. Size of farmlands, farmers' knowledge, and low investment in agriculture sector are the main obstacles for PF adoption in Iran.

Although such other ways as image processing can be made use of to sort an agricultural product ,the spectroscopic method can be a more sophisticated way of assessing the internal quality of the product. In this research optical method as based on Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (900-1600 nm) has been employed to determine moisture content and brix index in carrot. A total number of 60 samples were taken for the modeling ,whereas 40 samples used for the calibration set. A number of 20 samples were taken to be employed for prediction set. Four pre-processing methods ,including average smoothing ,Multiplicative Scatter Correction (MSC), first and second derivatives , were applied to improve the pred...
