A movie that holds you as the stupidest creature on the earth, that somehow manages to be offensively rushed yet overstuffed with so much uninteresting stuff that it gradually becomes more and more painful to watch. I wanted to bash the editor, but it's probably the director who was smoking the most crack here; that would explain the laughably ridiculous, pathetic editing choices. And plot lines. And the fact that the main character wants to live after finding a man with whom she has no chemistry and no writing that explains their relationships… If anything, he ruins her mission… ???????? And I expected her to be like this badass warrior, but she ended up being…

The main character spent 80% of the time trying to figure out what to forgive. I could tell you dear Scarlet when it was only half way through, it was Hosoda asking us to forgive him for this horrible movie. Which I will not.

Engaging adventure anime from the HCU (Hamlet Cinematic Universe). It’s after the events of the Shakespeare play, and a gender-swapped Hamlet, here named Scarlet, continues her quest for revenge against Claudius in the Otherworld. There she teams up with a present-day EMT, and together they embark on a journey that takes them through an interesting mix of alternate cultures and characters (including Hamlet characters) in this eerie land. The animation was attractive, and occasionally stunning, in IMAX. It features some good anime action, some powerful emotional moments of discovery for Scarlet, and interesting subtext about how our destiny is shaped by our time and place in history. It’s well worth checking out.

The middle really drags but it gets somewhere moving and has some of Hosoda’s strongest imagery in its final scenes. The destination is worth the overlong journey.
