Inside Volunteer Build Nights
Inside Volunteer Build Nights
There’s something powerful about standing shoulder to shoulder in a workshop, tools in hand, knowing that what you’re building will soon become part of someone’s daily life. Our Volunteer Build Nights were created to open that door wider. What began as a simple idea, more opportunities for people to meaningfully connect with our mission, has grown into a thriving monthly community. In response to requests for hands-on engagement, our board members stepped up to sponsor these evenings, investing n

Dear Friends and Community Partners,Each day at Adaptive Design begins the same way: stepping out of a very busy New York City and into a workshop that feels like its own ecosystem. The pace inside is both urgent and deliberately slow. Urgent because the needs are real and often time-sensitive. Slow because listening, truly listening, to a frustrated, hopeful, and deeply optimistic community requires care. The space itself tells the story. You walk in, and you are surrounded by projects in motion

How To | Line it like a Pro | Edging Tactile Cards
Have you ever wondered how to make your own communication cards? At the Adaptive Design Association, we create communication cards, also called tangibles or tactile symbols. Communication cards are tactile representations of activities, objects, places, events, concepts or people and are used for expressive and receptive communication. They are usually made of whole objects or parts of objects attached to a background card. Cards are made using triple-ply cardboard, cut 6" x 4", edged, painted, embedded with an object and finally labeled. Here is a demonstration of edging communication cards with masking tape. Learn more about communication cards at Adaptive Design: https://www.adaptivedesign.org/communicationcards Learn more and download a manual here: https://www.aph.org/product/stacs-standardized-tactile-augmentative-communication-symbols-kit/ Thank you, Cori, for sharing your excellent edging skills.
