Situated just above the spectacular Church Ope Cove, Portland Museum sits in an area rich in history that features dinosaurs, fossils, shipwrecks and smugglers, Rufus Castle, Pennsylvania Castle and the ruins of St Andrew’s Church. It houses a collection on locally based themes of quarrying and the Portland Stone industry, maritime history, archaeology, folklore and local customs, and fossils and the Jurassic era. In November 2021, Portland Museum won a National Lottery grant to fund its Diving into the Digital Archives of the Earl of Abergavenny project. The fund is being used to upskill volunteers in digital recording techniques for sharing and cataloguing items in the Earl of Abergavenny shipwreck collection. You can find out more about the project and its collection here on this channel and at portlandmuseum.co.uk
