Tech refresh time for Australia’s research supercomputers
Tech refresh time for Australia’s research supercomputers
Australia’s research supercomputers, a critical digital layer in the national science infrastructure, are ready for a technology refresh with the need to start planning becoming increasingly urgent. Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre chief executive officer Mark Stickells says its WA-based Setonix system is moving into the fourth years of a five-year refresh cycle. Funded jointly by the Australian and WA governments, Pawsey is in a tough position, just as competition for federal and state budget attention gets crowded, and geopolitical and economic conditions deteriorate. It's funding is via many pockets of support, including the CSIRO which manages the facility, and university partners.
