How do I request a letter of recommendation?

Colleges often require 2–3 recommendation letters to showcase your skills, character, and accomplishments beyond grades. Ask early—ideally at the start of senior year—and give at least a month’s notice. Follow each college’s requirements, choosing a current or junior-year teacher who knows you well; consider counselors, coaches, or advisers if allowed. Provide a resume or “brag sheet” with achievements, projects, and goals to help them write a strong, specific letter. Waive your right to view the letter, share accurate contact info and deadlines, track submissions, and follow up politely. Always thank your recommenders and share your final college choice.
