Baby Dreadlocks?

I asked a few months ago about people's experience with their kids' hair and got some great answers and suggestions. We've been doing a fairly good job of keeping Liam's hair tangle free. There is still that trouble-spot in the back where his head rubs on the mattress though. It seems to form into dreadlocks really easily (which are then a BIG pain to comb out). So I've been thinking it might be easier to just go with the flow and let the boy have dreadlocks. I am just wondering if any of you have any experience with dreadlocks on toddlers? Should I get it done at a salon? Do it myself? Let them form naturally? How about maintenance?
