A Catholic View to Prop H8
Hello, I am new to this community - I'm from Los Angeles. Even though I'm not old enough to vote ((14, y'see)), my family and I supported NO on Prop H8. Then, again, everyone in this community has. But what makes my family a rarity among people of our congregation is that we are also Roman Catholics.
Now, I sometimes see Prop H8 through a religious perspective. Many of the arguments for Prop 8 are from the Book of Leviticus and much of the Old Testament. See, the problem with that is in the OT, slavery was also allowed, you couldn't eat shellfish, and animal sacrificing was allowed. So, of course, those things being allowed aren't good. In fact, that line in the Bible allowing slavery was also the main argument for slavery in America. "But it says so in the Bible!" "It's God's Word!" Well, America stamped that argument out, and I'm sure proud of it.
I've also noticed that the support comes from mainly the CHRISTIAN side. ((And I feel ashamed for it to come from my people.)) Please, just because your relgion says something doesn't mean the law has to bend in that direction. After all, last time I checked there is such thing as a Separation of Church and State.
And yet, we all seem to forget that one line from Jesus:
"Do unto others as you would have others done unto you."
So, that's me. I hope I helped the LGBT community with that post. Thank you for your time.
