外国人が選ぶ“日本の町”に見えた新しい可能性

一軒の古民家に、まちの再生の可能性を感じた日

先日、とても印象的なお話を聞きました。
アメリカで不動産業をしている男性が、静岡にある大きな古民家（かつて日本の大手企業の社長の家）を購入し、現金でリノベーションを依頼。さらに、その地域で英語スクールを始めたそうです。

すごいのは、彼が「この場所が好きだから」ここに来てくれたこと。

日々生徒と向き合う中で、私はいつも、言葉や学びが生徒だけでなく、地域全体に元気を与える力があると感じています。
この話を聞いて、「好奇心と愛情をもって来てくれる人がいること」こそが、まちを動かす最初の火種になるのかもしれない…と改めて思いました。

もしかしたら学びにも、少しずつ、まちの再生の可能性を秘めているのかもしれませんね。

The Day I Felt an Old House Could Bring New Hope to a Town

The other day, I heard a story that made me think about the quiet potential of small towns.
An American man who runs a real estate business in the U.S. purchased a large, old house in Shizuoka. The house once belonged to the president of a major Japanese company. He decided to renovate it, paying in cash, and also started an English language school in the area.

I was amazed not just by his action, but by the fact that he chose this place because he loves Japan.

As someone who works closely with students every day, I often feel that language and learning have the power to energize not just individuals, but entire communities.
This story reminded me that when someone arrives with curiosity and love for a place, it can spark something new.

Maybe learning itself holds the potential to help revitalize a town — little by little.
