Hello, London! An Adventure of a Translator in the UK_8; Here Comes the Wall to Overcome

Hello everyone, I’m Chayun.
I am surprised at the fact that I haven’t published any articles for a while, even though I’ve written some! This essay was written around May.

I have been busy moving and starting a new job, but I feel it is time to start a real life in the UK. I might’ve said the same thing before… Who cares!

My new flat is not as clean as the previous one, and my room is small. Despite all those drawbacks, all of my flatmates are sweet, which is a relief for me. Because of our schedules, I’m getting closer to one of them and often spending time with her. This is already a perfect benefit of moving to the new flat. My environment is all in English at work and at home. That’s what I wanted. I wanted to absorb English as much as possible, as I was in the UK. In a sense, I felt relieved.

The new job is neither translation nor interpreting, and not even what I am very good at, to be fair. I constantly have days when I feel “I did a good job” and “I was just incapable of anything”. That’s normal for someone who starts a new thing. I'm not that young and have some life experience, so I understand how new things impact me in my mind, unlike my heart. I feel my mental age and thinking level have gone back to being more immature than my real age, maybe by 5 years. I ask myself, “Wasn’t I better at work?”, and answer to myself, “No, that’s only my imagination”, which I have experienced at a much much much younger age. And I feel nostalgic and embarrassed about it!
What I’ve found different from the work in Japan so far is the communication style and the procedure of tasks. On the contrary, what has not been clear to me is the reason I feel tough about the job. I have not been able to ‘factorise’ that. Anyway, the new things are always with some difficulties, more or less, and I will take some time to reveal them.
The new environment has given me chances to meet new people. During this time, there was an opportunity for me to get to know more about religions and cultures I had not had a chance to learn about, which has broadened my horizon. Although I found I needed some time to digest some parts, this notice is exactly what I can enjoy because I’m in this multi-cultural city.

By the way, I did a three-day job at an exhibition in a position titled an interpreter, which was not true though. I enjoyed meeting various people and found it meaningful to expand my connections. I have been acquiring techniques to expand my connection and live here like this… Two years, which is the length I can stay here, is not long enough. Two years personally seems to be the minimum amount to build a foundation. Once I finally make a solid foundation, I will have to go back to Japan. I feel frustrated when I imagine that. Unless I do an interpreting/ translation job, it might not sound reasonable to me that I desire to stay in the UK. I’m feeling I'm gradually approaching my goal on an invisible path. When I think there are not many ways I can make my carefully planted seeds bloom, I feel sort of hopeless. Having said that, I am not giving up anything at all! My days with a lot of trial and error will continue.

This is exactly an adventure for me! I will go for it!

Thank you for bearing with me whining.

See you soon.
