A Temple That Isn’t What It Seems

見た目は普通のお寺、なのに中身はまるで迷路

Myōryū-ji, widely known as the “Ninja Temple,” is one of Kanazawa’s most mysterious destinations. From the outside, it looks like a quiet, unassuming temple—simple, modest, and peaceful.
「忍者寺」として知られる妙立寺は、金沢で最も不思議な場所のひとつ。外観は実に控えめで、普通の寺院にしか見えません。

But the moment you step inside, the illusion breaks.
しかし、一歩中に入るとその印象は崩れます。

Hidden staircases.
Trapdoors.
Secret rooms.
False corridors.
A lookout disguised as an altar room.

隠し階段、落とし穴、秘密の部屋、フェイントの廊下、祭壇に見せかけた見張り部屋──
まるで迷路のような空間が続きます。

These devices were not for ninjas, but for defense. During the Edo period, under strict shogunate regulations, the Maeda clan could not build castles freely, so they developed this temple as a strategically fortified structure.
これらは忍者のためではなく、防衛のための仕掛け。江戸時代、幕府の城郭規制の中で前田家が直接城を増強できなかったため、寺院の形を借りて巧妙に防衛機能を備えたのです。

A Guide Who Explained Everything — Details in English but too fast to follow and read
英語の解説は読むヒマが無いほど早いけど 定年なガイド説明

One of the most impressive aspects of my visit was the guide.
What surprised me was how much information and detail they had to explain in just 40min. and it was SO fast that eventhough they hand out other language written guidebook to follow, its a bit tough to keepup! but the information written was exactsame as what was explaind in Japanese.
驚いたのは、案内してくださったガイドの方の情報量と詳細内容の40分間のボリュームです。とにかく早くて他の言語は冊子を渡されて､どのページと読んでいくのですが、追いつかない！　だけど他の言語で書かれていた内容は日本語の説明も全く同じ内容でした。

They explained every trapdoor, every hidden passage, and the historical reasoning behind each structure.
その場の仕掛けひとつひとつの意味、歴史的背景を英語と日本語で分かりやすく説明してくれる姿に、ただの観光案内ではない“伝える力”を感じました。

Thanks to them, the complex structure didn’t just feel like a collection of tricks—it became a living lesson in Edo-period strategy.
ガイドの説明のおかげで、複雑な仕掛けが「珍しい構造」ではなく「江戸時代の戦略そのもの」として理解できました。

Understanding the Connection: Temple & Castle

寺と城主の関係を知れたことも大きな発見

Another meaningful discovery was learning about the temple’s relationship with the Maeda clan, the lords of Kanazawa Castle.
もう一つ印象的だったのは、この寺と金沢城・前田家との関係を知れたことです。

Myōryū-ji was not merely a religious site—it functioned as a hidden stronghold under the protection and design of the Maeda family. Understanding this connection added depth to my experience from Vol.1 at Kanazawa Castle.
妙立寺は単なる宗教施設ではなく、前田家によって整えられた隠し砦だったのです。
この背景を知ると、Vol.1で訪れた金沢城とのつながりがより立体的に感じられ、旅が繋がっていく感覚がありました。

Strolling the Historic Temple Roads
見学後の寺町散歩

After the guided tour, I walked through the quiet lanes of Tera-machi. Once a strategic defensive belt, it now feels peaceful—lined with temples, wooden gates, mossy stone walls, and narrow paths shaped by centuries.
見学後は、静かな寺町通りを散策しました。かつては金沢を守るための防衛ラインだった地域も、今は静かな時間が流れ、木の門や苔むした石垣、細い道が何百年もの歴史を物語っています。

Walking these roads after experiencing Myōryū-ji made me feel as if the entire district was part of the same story—where architecture, strategy, and faith intersected.
妙立寺の仕掛けを体験した後に歩く寺町は、まるであの迷路のような世界が外にも続いているようで、建築と戦略と信仰が重なる街だと改めて感じました。
