VOL.02: What People Found by Drones Have in Common — Characteristics AI Search Drones "Never Miss"

In my previous article, I explained that it is "impossible to truly hide" from a drone. This is because an AI drone doesn't look for a person—it looks for "Heat and Movement."

So, what exactly do those who are easily detected by drones have in common?

The Night of the Blizzard: Why Koji was Saved

Koji (42), whom we met in our last installment, pressed his body against a rock, covered himself with snow and branches, and held his breath. "I must be perfectly camouflaged now..." he believed.

However, an AI-equipped search drone located Koji in just a few minutes. Why? Because Koji met almost every single one of the following "Common Characteristics of People Easily Found by Drones."

5 Common Characteristics AI Drones Prioritize

AI drones—specifically those using thermal cameras and AI analysis—prioritize the detection of the following features:

1. Body Temperature is Significantly Higher than the Surroundings

A human's body temperature is roughly 36–37°C. The larger the temperature difference between you and the snow, rocks, or cold ground, the brighter you appear as a glowing white silhouette on a thermal image. If you haven't cooled down completely, like Koji in a freezing environment, you radiate intense heat. AI specifically analyzes pixels around the forehead and head to determine the presence of a human and even the progression of hypothermia.

2. Traces of Subtle "Movement"

Even if you are perfectly still, your breathing or slight body tremors (shivering or shifting posture) cause fluctuations in heat distribution. AI has already "learned" the patterns of human movement. Even if you hold your breath, it detects the microscopic movements of a living human. "Playing dead" or total stillness is surprisingly ineffective.

3. Incomplete Heat Shielding

Even if you are visually hidden by branches, snow, or camouflage sheets, heat easily leaks from the sides or underneath. AI flags "human-like heat sources" immediately in cases where:

  • The body is not in direct contact with the ground (allowing heat to escape through gaps).

  • Thermal blankets or cloths are used improperly (trapping heat in a way that actually makes you stand out).

  • You are hiding in thin brush or gaps between trees.

4. "Human-Like" Posture and Form

AI analyzes whether a shape is standing, sitting, or lying down. Survivors often lie down or huddle due to fatigue, which is recognized with high precision as a "human silhouette." Even if you are curled into a ball, the AI judges you based on the ratio of the head to the torso and the specific distribution of heat.

5. Signs of Abnormal Body Temperature

Ironically, those progressing into hypothermia are sometimes easier to find. AI is trained to recognize abnormal temperature patterns and prioritizes these as "humans in need of help." Often, people are found right at the stage before their temperature drops so low that they become indistinguishable from their surroundings.

The Truth Behind Koji's Discovery

Koji hid behind a rock and covered himself with branches and snow. However, his body still had enough heat, and his subtle movements from breathing continued.

As a result, the rescue team rushed to the scene, and Koji’s life was saved. He later told the rescuers: "I thought I was completely hidden... but the heat and movement were 'proof of life' that the AI didn't miss. Thank you for finding me."

What You Need to Know

  • The Bad News: It is extremely difficult to hide perfectly from a drone.

  • The Good News: If you understand how this works, you can use it to "be found" when it matters.

When stranded, prioritize insulation—"don't move, don't let heat escape." Use emergency thermal blankets correctly to maintain your temperature while waiting for rescue. Conversely, if you are waiting to be saved, knowing that "heat and movement" are your allies can save your life.

AI drones are not always the enemy. It all depends on how you use them. In the darkness and the blizzard, they are modern guardians—gently searching for your "proof of life."

Whether you're heading into the mountains or preparing for a disaster, this knowledge can be the difference between life and death. Understand the "eye" of the AI drone and protect what matters most.
