Welcome to Japanese walk.

今回は、熊本県にある「天空の神社」に行った時の様子をお届けします。
This time, I’ll share with you my visit to the “Shrine in the Sky” in Kumamoto Prefecture.

美しい景色を見つつ、神社について学習しつつ、日本語や日本の文化について学習していきましょう。
While enjoying the beautiful scenery and learning about the shrine, let’s also study Japanese and Japanese culture together.

今日もドライバーは父。
Today, as always, my father is the driver.

山道ドライブからスタートです。
We start off with a mountain road drive.

今回の目的地は熊本県にある、「天空の神社」と呼ばれる「倉岳神社」です。
Our destination this time is “Kuratake Shrine,” also known as the “Shrine in the Sky,” in Kumamoto Prefecture.

なぜ「天空の神社」と呼ばれるのか、それは動画の後半に映像を見ればわかるはず。
Why is it called the “Shrine in the Sky”? You’ll understand once you see the video later on.

今回のドライブには、旅のお供として愛犬「さくまる」も一緒です。
Joining us on this trip is our beloved dog, Sakumaru.

散歩よりもドライブが大好きです。
He loves drives even more than walks.

いよいよ今回の目的地「天空の神社」へと出発です。
It’s finally time to head toward our destination, the “Shrine in the Sky.”

向かう途中に面白い看板を見つけました。
On the way, we found an interesting signboard.

それがこれです。
Here it is.

あるアニメに登場するフォントに似ていませんか？
Doesn’t the font look similar to one used in a certain anime?

そのアニメとは「エヴァンゲリヲン」です。
That anime is Evangelion.

日本ではとてつもなく有名なアニメの１つですが、海外では「エヴァンゲリヲン」はどのくらい認知されているのでしょうか。
In Japan, it’s one of the most famous anime series, but how well known is Evangelion overseas, I wonder?

なんにせよ、「エヴァンゲリヲン」にはこんな感じのフォントがよく使われます。
In any case, fonts like this are often used in Evangelion.

さてここでプチ日本語クイズ。
Now, here’s a little Japanese quiz.

この看板に大量にかかれているこの言葉、なんて読むかわかりますか。
Do you know how to read the phrase that’s written all over this signboard?

そして意味はわかりますか？
And do you know what it means?

正解は「急いじゃダメだ。」です。
The correct answer is: Isoi ja dame da. (“Don’t rush.”)

アニメの中では主人公が「逃げちゃダメだ」と連呼するシーンがありますね。
In the anime, there’s a scene where the protagonist repeatedly says, Nigecha dame da (“I mustn’t run away”).

「天空の神社」があるのは、標高682mの山の頂上。
The “Shrine in the Sky” is located at the summit of a mountain with an altitude of 682 meters.

東京にある「スカイツリー」の高さは、634mなので、スカイツリーよりも高いところに向けてひたすら登って行きます。
For comparison, Tokyo’s Skytree stands at 634 meters, so we’re climbing even higher than that.

やっと駐車場に到着です。
Finally, we arrived at the parking lot.

ここにも鳥居がありますが、まだゴールではありません。
There’s already a torii gate here, but this isn’t the goal yet.

もう少し登って行きましょう。
Let’s climb a little further.

アマビエさんを発見しました。
We spotted an Amabie.

「アマビエ」とは、江戸時代後期に現れたとされる妖怪で病気から人々を守る存在として知られています。
An Amabie is a yokai said to have appeared in the late Edo period, known for protecting people from illness.

さてここでもプチ日本語クイズ。
Here’s another mini Japanese quiz.

またどんな意味でしょうか？
And what do they mean?

正解は、「コロナに負けるな　頑張れ日本」
The correct answer is: Korona ni makeruna. Ganbare Nippon.

絶景。その一言に尽きます。
The view is breathtaking. Truly, the word “spectacular” says it all.

とても神秘的です。
It feels so mystical.

海に浮かぶたくさんの小島の形もとてもユニーク。
The shapes of the many small islands floating in the sea are also very unique.

360度見渡せて、いつまでも見ていられる景色です。
With a 360-degree view, it’s a sight you could look at forever.

「神社」とは、日本の伝統的な宗教である「神道」に基づいて、神（カミ）をまつる場所です。
A shrine is a place where kami (deities) are enshrined, based on Japan’s traditional religion, Shinto.

「鳥居」とは、神社の入口にある門のことで、俗世界と神聖な世界の境界を示します。
A torii is a gate at the entrance of a shrine, marking the boundary between the everyday world and the sacred world.

平べったい石が積み重ねられたエリアもあり、それと一緒に景色を見ると、なんとも不思議な感覚に襲われます。
There’s also an area where flat stones are stacked. When you view the scenery with them, you’re struck with a mysterious feeling.

そういえば以前、ニュージーランドに行った時にも、同じように積み重ねられた石を見た記憶があります。
Speaking of which, I remember seeing similar stacked stones when I went to New Zealand before.

この場所実は、僕が育った町から車で1時間くらいの場所にあるんですが、恥ずかしながら最近までこの場所の存在すら知らず、今回初めてくることができました。
Actually, this place is only about an hour’s drive from the town where I grew up. But embarrassingly, I didn’t even know it existed until recently, and this is my first time visiting.

なんでも知ってると思ってた自分の家の周りに、意外と穴場のスポットが隠れているかもしれません。
There may be more hidden gems around my hometown that I thought I knew so well.

これから色々と発掘して行きたいと思います。
I’d like to discover more of them from now on.

この場所は、最近インスタグラムで少しずつ認知されるようになった場所で、今日はたくさんの観光客の方々で溢れていました。
This place has recently started gaining recognition on Instagram, and today it was crowded with many tourists.

日本の国旗も掲げられています。
The Japanese national flag is also displayed here.

Now, here’s a question about Japan’s flag.

白い背景に、赤い丸というシンプルなデザインですが、これは何を表しているでしょう。
It has a simple design: a red circle on a white background. But what does it represent?

正解は、Cの太陽。
The correct answer is C: the Sun.
