このＣＤは、１９８５年にウィーンで録音されたもので、カラヤンが生涯にわたって愛したドヴォルザークの代表作を、最晩年の名指揮者が自らの解釈で見事に再現したものです。

カラヤンは、ドヴォルザークの交響曲を何度も録音しており、特に第９番「新世界より」は４回もスタジオ録音しています。その中でも、１９７７年にベルリン・フィルと録音したものは、カラヤンサウンドの典型として高く評価されています。

しかし、この１９８５年盤は、それとは一線を画す演奏です。カラヤンは、この頃になると、オーケストラを強引にコントロールすることをやめて、音楽そのものに従って自然な流れを作り出すようになりました。その結果、ドヴォルザークの音楽が持つ豊かな表情や感情が素直に伝わってきます。

音質については、ＳＨＭ－ＣＤ化によって若干の改善が見られますが、それほど大きな違いはありません。しかし、カラヤンの演奏が持つ魅力は、音質に関係なく感じられるものです。

このＣＤは、カラヤンとウィーン・フィルによるドヴォルザークの交響曲の最高傑作と言えるでしょう。野球の試合に例えれば、ダブルヘッダーで両試合とも完全試合を達成したようなものです。ドヴォルザークの音楽を愛する方には、ぜひ聴いていただきたい名盤です。

This CD was recorded in Vienna in 1985, and is a wonderful reproduction of Dvořák's masterpiece, which Karajan loved throughout his life, in his own interpretation by the famous conductor in his final years.

Karajan has recorded Dvořák's symphonies many times, especially No. 9 "From the New World", which he recorded in the studio four times. Among them, the one he recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1977 is highly regarded as a typical Karajan sound.

However, this 1985 edition is a performance that stands out from that. Around this time, Karajan stopped trying to forcefully control the orchestra and started letting the music flow naturally. As a result, the rich expressions and emotions of Dvořák's music are clearly conveyed.

For example, in the first movement of No. 8, there is a bright and light atmosphere from the introduction, and when the theme appears, the Vienna Philharmonic's woodwind instruments play a beautiful melody. In the middle section, the stringed instruments sing gracefully, which is also impressive. At the end of the piece, the timpani beats powerfully to create excitement, but Karajan continues to play calmly without rushing the tempo too much.

In No. 9, "From the New World," the famous second movement's melody of the journey home is especially wonderful. Karajan not only sings this melody movingly, but also slows down the tempo and plays it quietly in the middle. This part gives us a sense of the calm and deep state that Karajan reached in his final years. In the fourth movement, the tension builds from the beginning, but at the climax, the entire orchestra comes together to create a magnificent sound.

The Vienna Philharmonic also gives a wonderful performance paying homage to Karajan. The beauty and softness of the woodwind and string instruments are particularly outstanding. The brass section and timpani also sound powerfully, but the sound is well-balanced without being overly assertive.

Regarding the sound quality, there is a slight improvement with the conversion to SHM-CD, but the difference is not that big. However, the charm of Karajan's performance can be felt regardless of the sound quality.

This CD can be said to be the masterpiece of Dvořák's symphonies performed by Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic. If you compare it to a baseball game, it would be like a double header where both games were perfect. This is a masterpiece that anyone who loves Dvorak's music should definitely listen to.
