Kao’s Emal has introduced an environmentally friendly bottle for its laundry detergent in Japan. The new bottle keeps the same look and durability, but aims to reduce plastic use. Kao says that, overall, the container uses about 13% less plastic, and the bottle weight itself is cut by about 23%. The bottle will launch later this month.

To keep strength, engineers used hidden ribs inside the bottle to reinforce the walls. This design keeps the outside smooth and familiar for shoppers, while quietly cutting plastic waste.

The team says they hope to share this technology so it can become an industry standard. They describe this as a quiet change that helps the environment without changing how people use the product.
