📝 Summary

Major international sporting events continue to attract large audiences around the world, including competitions such as the Winter Olympics, the Paralympics and the World Baseball Classic.

However, the way people watch sports has changed dramatically in recent years. Streaming services are increasingly acquiring exclusive broadcasting rights, meaning some events can only be viewed through paid subscriptions.

In Japan, the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic are not available on terrestrial television because Netflix holds exclusive streaming rights.

The situation raises questions about whether popular sporting events should remain accessible to everyone. Some argue that major events are cultural assets that should be freely available, while others believe that government intervention could undermine broadcasters’ independence and market competition.

As television has evolved from analog to digital and then to online streaming, the issue of who sports broadcasts are meant for—and how viewers’ rights should be protected—has become an increasingly complex question.

📌 Quote

💬 Emma’s Comment(English)

The freedom to pursue profit should certainly be respected.
However, if the organizers of the World Baseball Classic truly hope to promote baseball around the world, the current broadcasting arrangement seems to place profit ahead of that ideal.

Some reports suggest that Netflix’s main objective is to increase its number of subscribers in Japan.
Yet not every household can easily afford subscription fees. Even in Japan, some families would struggle to pay for such services.

Watching world-class athletes represent their countries can inspire children and young people to dream of becoming athletes themselves one day.
Sports have the power to create those dreams.
It is unfortunate if such opportunities become inaccessible to many children.

Another concern is that many streaming services now show advertisements even to viewers who already pay subscription fees.

Pursuing profit is natural for businesses.
But the larger a company’s influence becomes, the more it should also consider how it can contribute to the next generation.

Perhaps the organizers of the WBC should also return to the original purpose of the tournament and reconsider what message they want to send to the world—and to whom.
