📝 Summary

The Seishun 18 Kippu, first introduced in 1982, remains in circulation 44 years later despite changes in Japan’s railway system.

Originally created by the former Japanese National Railways, the ticket allowed unlimited travel on local and rapid trains at an affordable price, giving young travelers the freedom to journey at their own pace.

Over the decades, its price and usage conditions have evolved, but its spirit of slow, unhurried travel endures.

Historic promotional posters associated with the ticket capture the atmosphere of their eras, often accompanied by witty captions such as “Someday, you’ll have to rush.”

Though labeled “Youth,” the ticket has no age restriction and continues to be used by travelers of all generations.

The piece reflects on the passage of time, the value of unhurried youth, and the quiet longing for travel that spring often brings.

💬 Emma’s Comment(English Translation)

I have never traveled using the Seishun 18 Kippu, but I have always known about it.
I love traveling and have visited many places both in Japan and abroad.

Looking back, I realize how much time I had in those days.
I even believed that such a period would last forever.

When I was younger, I did not have much money, so I could not simply go wherever I wanted.
Later in life, I found that while I had more financial freedom, I no longer had the time.

That is why I hope young people will travel as much as possible while they still have time, even if it means stretching themselves a little.
Encounters with unfamiliar cultures and people broaden one’s perspective and undoubtedly enrich life.

There is an English word, serendipity.
A seemingly insignificant encounter or event can unexpectedly become a turning point in life.

And now, as conflicts and wars continue around the world, flight routes are altered and travel restrictions are imposed.
I sincerely hope that one day soon, young people will once again be able to travel safely and freely across the globe.

Including the children living in countries where war is still ongoing.
