Although I have never formally studied abroad, I have spent a great deal of time overseas through work and travel.
When I add up those days, they amount to the length of a study-abroad experience.
Living abroad as a Japanese person allows you to see Japan from the outside—
something that cannot be fully understood while staying within the country.
Through exposure to different cultures, I came to recognize both the strengths and the challenges of Japanese society.
Each of those realizations was invaluable.
Given the current uncertainty surrounding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s future actions,
it is understandable that more people feel uneasy about studying in the United States.
At the same time, the continued weakness of the yen makes studying abroad an even heavier financial burden.
Making it difficult for international students to enter a country also means limiting opportunities
to attract talented individuals from around the world.
In the long run, this can only be a loss for the country itself.
Even so, I strongly hope that the younger generation will step beyond this small island nation
and see the world with their own eyes.
Whether they return to Japan or remain abroad, such experiences will undoubtedly add depth and richness to their lives.
Presidents have term limits.
Rather than giving up on their dreams because of one political leader’s actions,
I hope young people will stay focused on their own goals and continue moving forward.
