今年の秋の彼岸入りは明日の9月20日，中日（ちゅうにち）にあたる秋分は9月23日，彼岸明けは9月26日である。仏教の考えである。「彼岸」とは生死の海をわたって到達する悟りの世界を指すといい，「此岸（しがん）」とは煩悩と迷いに満ちた今いる世界のことをいうのだそうだ。この期間に仏さまを供養することで極楽浄土に行けると信じられている。

　7世紀に中国浄土教の善導（ぜんどう）の著書『観無量寿経疏（かんむりょうじゅきょうしょ）』の中に「太陽が真東から出て真西に沈み，阿弥陀仏の国は日没のところ真西の十万億刹の彼方にある」との記述があり，これが浄土宗の法然上人と浄土真宗の親鸞聖人に影響を与え，彼岸のルーツとされているということだ。
