SLAPP Lawsuit Against Islamic Studies Scholar and Public Commentator Dr. Akari Iiyama: First Hearing at Tokyo District Court
On May 19th, 2025, at 14:15 JST, the Tokyo District Court will hold the first hearing in a lawsuit filed by the Conservative Party of Japan against Dr. Akari Iiyama, a scholar of Islamic thought and a prominent public commentator.
The lawsuit concerns an article in which Dr. Iiyama stated that the Conservative Party “has done nothing regarding the repeal of the LGBT Understanding Promotion Act.” The party claims this statement is false and has filed suit for defamation.

According to Nobukatsu Fujioka, chairman of the recently established Support Group for Victims of Political Suppression by the Conservative Party, this lawsuit is part of a pattern of legal intimidation aimed at silencing dissenting voices through so-called SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation).
“This is the judicial weaponization of power,” Fujioka said. “It must not be allowed to continue in a democratic society.”
The plaintiff's legal team may also deliver a statement during the hearing, although it is unclear whether leading party officials such as Naoki Hyakuta and Kaori Arimoto will appear in person.
Observers fear that this case represents a growing threat to freedom of expression and academic independence in Japan.
