The One Neighbourhood in Tokyo Where Everything Just Works

Imagine starting your morning with prayer at a mosque in the heart of Tokyo's anime capital. Then spending the day hunting for figures and manga, walking the same stone steps you have seen in your favourite series, and ending the evening with a bowl of wagyu ramen — all halal, all within the same neighbourhood, all without spending an hour on the train.
For many Muslim travelers, eating in Japan feels like a constant negotiation. Every meal requires a question — does this contain pork? Is there alcohol in the broth? What about the soy sauce? It is exhausting, and it can get in the way of actually enjoying the trip.
This route is different.
The stretch from Akihabara to Okachimachi has quietly become one of the most Muslim-friendly areas in Tokyo. Two mosques anchor either end of the walk. More than ten halal-certified and Muslim-friendly restaurants line the route. And running through the middle of it all is Akihabara — one of the most iconic anime and otaku shopping destinations in the world.
You do not have to choose between eating well and enjoying Japan. In this neighbourhood, you can do both.
In this guide you will find:
🕌 2 mosques with dedicated prayer spaces
🍜 10+ halal-certified and Muslim-friendly restaurants
🎌 5 anime pilgrimage sites tied to Noragami, Love Live!, Saekano, and more
🛍️ Tips for navigating Akihabara's otaku shopping district
🗺️ Two route options from Suehirocho depending on your priorities
Whether you are a first-time visitor to Japan or returning for another trip, this guide will help you make the most of one of Tokyo's most underrated areas for Muslim travelers.
A Note on Halal Status
Throughout this guide, restaurants are marked with one of three labels:
✓ Certified — the restaurant holds a formal halal certification from a recognised body (JHF, Naha, or similar)
○ Halal Friendly — the restaurant uses halal-conscious ingredients and practices but does not hold a formal certification
● Muslim Friendly — the restaurant is welcoming to Muslim guests and avoids pork and alcohol, but has not been formally assessed
What is right for you depends on your own standard and madhab. This guide gives you the information — the decision is yours.

🍣 Sushi Restaurant Fujiyama Akihabara — One of Tokyo's Very Few Halal-Friendly Sushi Restaurants

Finding halal-friendly sushi in Japan is genuinely rare. The challenge is not just the fish — it is the soy sauce, the mirin, the rice vinegar, and the seasonings used throughout the kitchen. Most sushi restaurants have never considered these issues at all.
Fujiyama has. Their dedicated halal course uses only pork-free, alcohol-free ingredients and halal-certified seasonings throughout, including the soy sauce. Two all-you-can-eat course options are available: a standard halal sushi course (¥7,900) and a premium course with snow/king crab and wagyu (¥19,900).
Note: The restaurant is not halal-certified as a whole — the kitchen is shared with general cooking, though utensils and storage are kept strictly separate. Please review their full policy and decide based on your own standard.
Hours: Mon–Sat & holidays 15:00–23:00 · Sun 15:00–22:00
Halal: ○ Halal Friendly (dedicated halal course)
Walking North: Akihabara's Otaku Shopping Strip

Head north along the main shopping street toward Suehirocho. This is the heart of Tokyo's anime and gaming culture — best explored at your own pace.
🎌 What to Look For

Anime and manga shops Multi-floor stores like Yodobashi Akiba, Animate, and Toranoana carry extensive selections of manga, light novels, anime Blu-rays, and merchandise. Even if you are not buying, browsing is an experience in itself.
Figure and collectible shops Akihabara has dozens of shops selling anime figures, Gunpla model kits, and limited-edition collectibles. Kotobukiya and Volks are the well-known names, but the best finds are often in the smaller specialty shops tucked in between.
Retro game stores Super Potato and similar stores sell vintage games and consoles going back to the Famicom era. Worth a look even if you are not a collector.
Maid cafés A distinctly Akihabara experience — themed coffee and light food served with costumed hospitality. Note that most maid cafés serve alcohol alongside non-alcoholic options; check before ordering.
Side Trip West: Kanda Myojin — Love Live! Pilgrimage Site

Between Akihabara and Suehirocho, heading west for about 10 minutes brings you to Kanda Myojin (Kanda Shrine) — one of Tokyo's most famous anime pilgrimage destinations.
Kanda Myojin is the real-world model for the shrine of Nozomi Tojo from Love Live!, and the stone steps behind the shrine (otokozaka) are well known among fans. As a Muslim visitor, you can appreciate the architecture and atmosphere as a cultural heritage site — there is no requirement to participate in religious rituals.
The Fork at Suehirocho: Choose Your Route
