Why Good Candidates Fail Document Screening in Japan
Many foreign candidates think:
“My English is good.”
“I have teaching experience.”
“I already worked in Japan.”
But sometimes, even good candidates fail document screening.
Why does this happen?
After checking many resumes and applications, I noticed something important.
In many cases, the problem is not the person.
The problem is missing information.
Recruiters Do Not Know You Personally
When recruiters check resumes, they only see documents.
They do not know:
・your personality
・your communication style
・your motivation
・your work attitude
They can only judge based on the information written on the resume.
Because of this, unclear resumes become risky.
Important Information Is Often Missing
For example, many resumes do not clearly explain:
・visa status
・working availability
・teaching experience
・student age groups
・Japanese level
・how long they worked at each job
Sometimes people simply write:
“English teacher”
But recruiters need more details.
For example:
・Kindergarten or adults?
・One-on-one lessons or large classes?
・Assistant teacher or main teacher?
・Part-time or full-time?
These details matter a lot in Japan.
Visa Status Is Very Important
This is something many applicants do not realize.
In Japan, visa type can strongly affect hiring decisions.
Even if two candidates have similar experience, the hiring result may change depending on:
・visa category
・remaining visa period
・work restrictions
Recruiters usually check this very early.
Simple English Is Better
Many people try to use very advanced English on resumes.
But simple and clear English is usually better.
Recruiters often read many resumes in a short time.
If the resume is easy to understand, it helps a lot.
Clear information is more important than complicated English.
Recruiters Want to Reduce Risk
This is very important.
Companies do not only look for “good people.”
They also look for “safe hiring decisions.”
If information is unclear, recruiters may worry about:
・visa problems
・communication problems
・schedule problems
・teaching ability
・job stability
This is why detailed information matters.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes candidates think:
“I was rejected because I am not good enough.”
But often, that is not true.
Sometimes the real problem is:
“The recruiter could not clearly understand the application.”
A clearer resume can change the result.
In future posts, I will also explain:
・common resume mistakes
・what recruiters check first
・how to write clearer resumes for jobs in Japan
