解説・例文
on 「表面に接触している状態」を表す。
例文：The coffee cup is on the table.
和訳：コーヒーカップがテーブルの上にある。
beneath 「表面のすぐ裏側や下に接触している状態」を表す。
例文：The letter was hidden beneath the pile of papers.
和訳：その手紙は書類の束の真下に隠されていた。
above 「（接触せず）ある基準点より高い位置」を表す。
例文：The sun rose above the horizon.
和訳：太陽が地平線の上に昇った。
below 「（接触せず）ある基準点より低い位置」をす。
例文：The temperature is five degrees below zero.
和訳：気温は氷点下（ゼロ度の下に）5度だ。

over 「何かを覆うように、または越えて上に」ある状態を表す。
例文：Put a cloth over the table to keep it clean.
和訳：汚れを防ぐためにテーブルの上に布をかけなさい。
under 「何かの真下や、覆われている状態」を表す。
例文：The cat is sleeping under the blanket.
和訳：猫が毛布の下に入って眠っている。
※抽象的な意味では「over」は数値や限界を超える時（例：over 100 people）に使われ、「above」は質や能力が上である時（例：above average）に使われることが多い
「上に」に関連する追加表現
upon
on の少しフォーマルな表現で、動作の直後や、心理的な重みがある時に使われる。
例文：Upon entering the room, Bill noticed a strange smell.
和訳：部屋に入るとすぐに、ビルは奇妙な臭いに気づいた。
On entering the room, …も可。
beyond
「〜を越えて」「〜の向こう側に」という、基準を上回るニュアンスを含む。
例文：The beauty of the sunset was beyond description.
和訳：その夕日の美しさは、言葉（の限界）を越えていた (筆舌に尽くしがたかった)。
onto
「〜の上へ」という、外側から表面への動きを強調。
例文：Jill jumped onto the stage to receive her award.
和訳：ジルは賞を受け取るために、ステージの上へ飛び乗った。
atop
「〜の頂上に」という、非常に高い場所のてっぺんを指す文語的な表現。
例文：A small flag was placed atop the mountain peak.

どこかへ移動して、その表面に乗る動きを強調。

「〜するとすぐに」という、日常の出来事の連続性を表す際にも使われる。※On〜ing, …も可。
