◆ A quiet hall in Kamakura. The air smells of pine and incense. A man sits on a raised platform. His eyes are sharp, his face serious. Around him, samurai await silently. He is Minamoto no Yoritomo.

◇ My name is Minamoto no Yoritomo. People call me the first shogun of Kamakura. But tonight, I will speak of my brother, Yoshitsune. Many ask: “Why could you not forgive him?” I will answer, not for pride, but for truth.

◆ Brother Yoshitsune was brave. He defeated the Heike. He was clever, fast, loved by samurai. That is true. I do not deny his skill or his fame.

◇ But skill is dangerous if it is not under the correct command. I was the Kamakura lord. If the samurai give their loyalty to him first, then the system of order I am building collapses. The reward of the court comes through me. If he bypasses me and the court gives him favor, then my authority is empty.

◆ Some say you were jealous.

◇ Jealousy is a word that fools many. I will call it caution. A leader cannot ignore a risk. My risk was simple: too much power in one who does not obey me. He is a threat. Not because he is my brother. But because he is independent of the shogunate.

◇ Yes. Even one lord who ignores the chain of loyalty can inspire many. If my vassals take orders from him, I am only a figure. Then Kamakura falls into chaos. My duty is to protect order, even against family.

◆ That is why you pursued him, even though he was your brother?

◇ Yes. Blood is important, but the state is above blood. A leader must think beyond love. Discipline and structure are the foundation of a new government. I built Kamakura so that loyalty and justice could last. If one man’s fame disrupts it, I cannot forgive.
