第1章　コメニウス・教育の父

コメニウスは1592年、  
今のチェコにあたる  
モラヴィアという小さな国で生まれた。  

彼は世界で初めて、  
すべての子どもに「学ぶ権利」を伝えた人。  
それがヨハン・アモス・コメニウスである。


当時のモラヴィアは、  
ハプスブルク家の支配下にあり、  
信仰の自由が  
制限されていた。  

キリスト教の中でも、  
カトリック以外の人々は  
迫害を受ける時代だった。  



それでもモラヴィアの人々は、  
祈りとともに  
学びを大切にしていた。  

文字を学ぶことは、  
神の言葉を理解することでもあった。  



コメニウスの家は、  
モラヴィア兄弟団と呼ばれる  
信仰共同体に属していた。  

兄弟団とは、  
互いに助け合いながら、  
清く正しく生きようとする  
人々の集まりだった。  



幼いころのコメニウスは、  
両親を早くに亡くし、  
孤独の中で育った。  

しかしその孤独が、  
のちに「人を導く教育」への  
強い思いへと変わっていく。  



16世紀の終わり、  
ヨーロッパでは宗教改革の波が  
広がっていた。  

「神の前ではすべての人が平等だ」  
という考えが芽生え、  
学びの形も  
変わろうとしていた。  



当時、学問は一部の聖職者や  
お金のある人のものだった。  

貧しい人々は働くことで精一杯、
本を手に取ることは出来なかった。



それでもコメニウスは信じていた。  
人は生まれながらにして、  
学ぶ力を持っている、と。  

知ることは、  
自分を守り、  
人を守る力になる。  



この信念が、  
のちに「すべての子どもに学びを」という  
彼の生涯のテーマとなっていく。  



戦争と貧しさの時代に、  
教育という光を掲げた  
一人の人間。  

それが、コメニウスだった。

Comenius was born in 1592,  
in Moravia, a small land  
now part of the Czech Republic.  

He was the first in the world  
to speak of every child’s right  
to learn and to grow through study.  
That man was Johann Amos Comenius.  

At that time Moravia lived  
under the Habsburg Empire,  
where freedom of faith was limited.  

Among Christians of the land,  
those who were not Catholic  
were persecuted and silenced.  

Yet the people of Moravia  
cherished both prayer and learning.  
To learn letters was to know God’s word.  

His family belonged to a faith  
called the Unity of the Brethren,  
a group that helped one another  
to live pure and honest lives.  

As a child Comenius lost  
his parents and grew in solitude,  
and that loneliness became  
his wish to guide through learning.  

By the end of the sixteenth century,  
the Reformation spread across Europe.  
“All are equal before God,” they said,  
and learning began to change.  

Knowledge then belonged only  
to priests and the wealthy few.  
Poor children in the villages  
worked hard, never reading a book.  

Still Comenius believed deeply  
that every person is born to learn.  
To know is to protect oneself,  
and to protect others as well.  

This belief became his lifelong theme—  
learning for every child on earth.  

In a time of war and hunger  
he carried the light of education.  
That was Comenius.
