セッション定番曲その262：These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)
ジャズ（ボーカル）セッションの定番曲。意味深な歌詞で人気があります。1935年に書かれた古いミュージカル曲ですが、今でも様々にアレンジされて演奏／歌唱されています。

ポイント1：Nat King Cole
1957年録音、この曲の代表的な歌唱です。暖かくてフレンドリーな歌声。発音も聞きやすくて、まさにお手本ですね。時々「語り口調」になるのもいいですね。歌詞に次々に出てくるエピソードひとつひとつを丁寧に描くような歌い方。ジャズボーカルは技巧的なものばかりが大事なのではない、とあらためて思います。
こういう歌がラジオから流れてきていた時代は素敵ですね。時代的には既に「ロックンロール」全盛期ですが・・・。
ポイント2：Aaron Neville
1993年録音、「顔と歌声が不一致」なシンガーの代表格。夢みるような甘く繊細な歌唱。ジャズボーカルというよりソウルシンガーが歌うバラード曲という感じですね。こういう使われ方をするから古いスタンダード曲は生き続けていく。
ポイント3：James Brown
1974年録音、なんとJBも歌っています。メロウなファンクソウル。ところどころで挟まるシャウトがなんともいいですね。
ポイント4：These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)
随分前に別れた恋人のことをふとしたキッカケで思い出してしまうことってありますよね。それが景色だったり音だったり匂いだったり・・・フラッシュバック。
普通はそれを口に出したりしないけど、それをわざわざ歌詞にして未練たらしく歌うことで気持ちを一旦整理しようということなのでしょうか。
ポイント5：歌詞のポイント（その1）

An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
「口紅の跡が付いたタバコの吸い殻」
「（ふたりでいつか行こうねと言っていた）素敵な街への航空券」
そんな物をふと目にすると、なんだかソワソワしてしまう主人公。
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
A fairground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
「近所から聴こえてくる（そんなに流暢じゃない）ピアノの音色」
「僕が君への思いを伝えようとした不器用な言葉たち」
「（一緒に遊んだ）遊園地のカラフルなブランコ」
「tinkling」は「鈴がチリンチリン鳴る」感じなので、上手い人が滑らかに弾いているんじゃなくて、ちょっと下手な人がポロンポロンと不器用に弾いているのかもしれません。別れた彼女の弾くピアノもそんな感じだったのかもしれません。ピアノの上手い恋人も優雅で素敵ですが、子供の頃に習ったピアノ曲を思い出しながら弾いてくれる恋人も愛おしいですよね。
歌詞が進むと段々と別れた恋人の人物像が浮かび上がってくる上手い歌詞ですね。

「You came, you saw, you conquered me」はジュリアス・シーザーの有名な「Veni, vidi, vici」というセリフのもじり。素早い戦略展開で敵国を打ち負かした際に呟いたとされています。
つまり「あなたはあっという間に私の心を虜にしてしまった、自分は抵抗なんて出来なかった」と。

「心が軽く踊ってしまうような春の暖かい風」
「誰も受話器を取らずに虚しくベルが鳴り続ける電話機」
君の幻がまだこの場に漂っている気がする・・・
「cling」は様々な歌詞に使われている「纏わり付いて離れない」というニュアンスの言葉です。
ポイント6：歌詞のポイント（その2）
例示は続きます。
First daffodils and long excited cables
And candle lights on little corner tables
「春に一番先に咲く黄水仙」「つい長くなってしまった電報」
「部屋の隅の小さな机の上の蝋燭の灯り」
「cables」は今はもう絶滅しかけている「電報」のことだと思われます。この曲が書かれた1936年には「急いで伝えたいことを形に残す」のにオシャレな手段だったのかもしれません。

「夕闇が迫ると鐘が鳴り響く公園」
「カモメが飛び交う『Ile de France』」
「春の美しさ（そのものの美女）」
ちょっと言葉遊びのような表現が増えてきますね。
「Ile de France」は「広域パリ」のような意味だと思います。

目に入る物を片っ端から挙げて、あれを見てもこれを見ても思い出してしまう、と。
ポイント7：曲の構成
典型的なAABA構成です。Aパートは歌詞が詰まっていて、メロディにのせて歌うのがちょっと大変。必然的に「語る」ように歌うことに。それに対してBパートはゆったりとした配分で、メリハリを付けています。

彼がスタンダード曲を歌う時の「軽さ」がいい味になっています。
Ella Fitzgerald、1957年録音
ヴァース（前説）から歌っています。最小限の伴奏で「歌」を聴かせるエラはいいですね。単調になりがちな長い曲なので、メロディに工夫して変化を付けています。

こういう雰囲気の曲を吹かせたら最高ですね、カフェで聴きたい。

徐々にメロディが浮かび上がってくる演奏、ジャズ喫茶で大音量で聴きたい。

どんどんメロディを崩して自己流にしてしまうBillie Holidayの真骨頂。良い子は真似しちゃダメ。

現代的なアレンジ。R&B、ネオソウル的な音空間での歌唱。いわゆる「ジャズボーカル・ファン」にはウケが悪そうですが、ここまでの振り幅を受け入れないと現代ジャズは聴けませんね。
