この先生の前では、良い自分でいたい I Want to Be My Best Self in Front of This Teacher
私には、理想とする教師像があります。それは、子供の習い事教室（陸上教室）で出会ったあるコーチです。教室には複数のコーチがいて、交代でメイン指導を担当しています。その中の1人のコーチの指導時、子供たちのパフォーマンスが明らかに良くなるのです。
なぜそのコーチの時に子供たちが集中し、成果を出せるのか。観察していて、いくつかの理由が見えてきました。
指示が的確で、わかりやすく、短い
指導の流れがリズミカルで、学習者の思考と行動が自然に連動する
時間配分が適切で、すべての活動が無駄なく進む
コーチ自身が話しすぎず、説明しすぎないことを徹底している
そのコーチは、決して厳しいわけでもなく、怖いわけでもありません。冗談も言うし、笑わせもします。そこまでは他のコーチとさほど変わらないのです。ただ、明らかに違う点、突出している点がありました。それが、子供たちの集中力と表情に現れていたのです。
他のコーチの時には、子供たちがだらけたり、冗談を言い合ったりする場面もあります。しかし、このコーチの前では、1時間ずっと集中し、表情も引き締まり、良いパフォーマンスが引き出されているのです。それは、子供たち自身が「この先生の前では良い自分でいたい」と思っている証拠だと感じました。
私も、そんな指導者になりたいと思っています。毎日でなくても、私の授業の時に、学習者のパフォーマンスが上がるような時間をつくりたい。そして、「この先生の前では良い自分でいたい」と思ってもらえるような存在になりたい。
この気づきは、日本語の授業を行う際にも常に意識しています。
I Want to Be My Best Self in Front of This Teacher
I have an ideal image of what a teacher should be. I found it in a coach at a children's track and field class. There are three coaches who take turns leading the sessions, but when one particular coach is in charge, the children’s performance clearly improves.
I observed this and began to understand why the children concentrate more and achieve better results under this coach’s guidance. There were several reasons:
Instructions are precise, easy to understand, and brief
The flow of instruction is rhythmic, allowing learners’ thoughts and actions to move naturally
Time is well-managed, with no wasted moments
The coach avoids over-explaining or talking too much
This coach is not strict or intimidating. He jokes around and makes the children laugh—just like the other coaches. But there was something distinctly different, something exceptional. It showed in the children’s focus and expressions.
With other coaches, the children sometimes slack off, joke around, or get distracted. But with this coach, they stay focused for the entire hour. Their expressions are serious, and their performance improves. I believe this is proof that the children want to be their best selves in front of him.
I want to become a teacher like that. Even if it’s not every day, I want my lessons to be moments when learners perform at their best. I want to be the kind of teacher who makes them think, “I want to be my best self in front of this teacher.”
This realization is something I always keep in mind when teaching Japanese.
