Can She Become an Expert?: My Mum’s Hilarious Rugby League Journey 🏉🧐
Sorry to keep you waiting! 👋
It's been a while since my last footy story.
Today's story started with a Socceroos match ⚽️
To my mum and me, this was a deeply serious conversation—though to all of you, it might just sound absolutely hilarious! 🤣
Here’s a hilarious, heartwarming story from my own living room that proves just how addictive Rugby League can be. Have fun! 🤭🏉
🧠How the NRL Completely Rewired My Mom’s Brain
It all started during the first weekend of the Football World Cup.
(Congratulations on your win, Soccoroos fans! 🎉🎉🎉)
The entire world was buzzing with football fever, and my mum and I happened to catch the Australia match. Seeing the Socceroos on screen, I casually tried to spark a conversation.
Me: Hey, the World Cup is finally here! 🇦🇺🇹🇷 Did you know Australia is playing? Mind you, rugby is so dominant over there that soccer isn't exactly the biggest sport. Even Honda used to play for Melbourne Victory back in the day, but…
Mum: (Looking completely uninterested 🤣) Hmm... to be honest, I'm not really into soccer anymore.
Me: What? Why?
Mum: Well, I’ve been watching way too much NRL with you, you know. Soccer is played with feet, not hands, right? The ball moves so slowly, and nobody ever scores! It’s just too frustrating and slow to watch! 🤷♀️
Me: Haha, I know what you mean! 🤣 I heard Union has gotten a bit faster, but it’s still nothing compared to League. And soccer? Forget about it, the scoreline barely moves! 🤣 The best part about the NRL is that non-stop, explosive speed!
Mum: Exactly!!! ☝️🤩
Me: Look at you! Without even realizing it, you're sounding exactly like a hardcore NRL pundit! 🤣 Ladies and gentlemen, we have an NRL expert analyst in the house! 👏🎤🤣
Mum: (Proudly) See? I told you so~ 😏
Me: You’ve officially become a seasoned veteran of the game! 🤣
Mum: (Looking so proud) 😎
🐶🎨My Mum's Ultimate Player Nicknames (And Her Duolingo Journey!)
My mum is now in her 6th or 7th year of watching 1 to 2 NRL games every single week because of my influence. She’s still like a footy baby for me though 🤭
While she absolutely loves the game, remembering foreign player names can be a bit of a challenge. Naturally, our living room has become a breeding ground for the funniest nicknames.
By the way, my mum is an absolute champion when it comes to dedication—she has a Duolingo streak of well over 2,400 days! Thanks to her daily English lessons, I get to witness her listening skills improve every single footy season. In her very first year, the only word she could catch from the commentary was "ball." But nowadays? She can actually pick up two or three consecutive words! (Mind you, she still misses about 99% of the rest of the commentary, but hey, that's progress! 🤣)
Because of her unique vocabulary, players get renamed in our house. For context, we used to have two beloved dachshunds who have since passed away. Their names were Joseph (whom we lovingly called "Yo-chan") and Johnny.
Somehow, our late dog Yo-chan's legacy has been passed down to none other than the Penrith Panthers' co-captain, Isaah Yeo 🐆! Whenever he's on screen, he's "Yeo-chan" to us. And our other boy Johnny? In my mum's mind, he has morphed into Jerome Luai 🐅 (why she chose Luai remains a strict family secret 🤫🤣).
The nickname madness doesn't stop there:
Adam Reynolds is simply known as "Tattoo" 🎨
Ezra Mam is "The boy who did that amazing Indigenous dance performance before his debut" ⚡
Reece Walsh is "The kid who came back from New Zealand" 🇳🇿✈️
Ben Hunt (Her nickname: "The Guy Who Will Hear About It for the Rest of His Life" 💀)This one is a bit heartbreaking, but hilarious. My absolute obsession with the Broncos started during the infamous 2015 Grand Final. It was my first weekend back in Brisbane after quitting my teaching job.We thought we had it won. Then came the dramatic equalizer, Adam Blair praying to the Maori gods, and JT miraculously missing the conversion. But right after that rollercoaster came Ben Hunt's devastating knock-on in golden point. That exact heartbreak made me a die-hard Broncos fan, and of course, I’ve re-told this story to my mum a million times! As a mental support professional, I was incredibly moved by his resilience later on. After 10 long years of carrying that weight—even playing through a concussion—he kept fighting until the Broncos finally achieved their fairytale redemption. It was a masterclass in mental strength! But sadly, in my mum's brain, first impressions are set in stone. No matter how much of a hero he is now, he will always be "The Guy Who Will Hear About It" in our living room! 🤣
And then there is Sam Walker. He is probably the only player whose full name my mum actually remembers. Why? Because she will never forget that infamous, completely un-professional yet hilarious moment when he took the ball and literally ran backwards into his own in-goal area to run down the clock at the end of a game. That performance locked his name in her brain forever! 🏃♂️💨
Huge apologies to all the players, and sorry Ben! 🤣
It's all out of pure love, I swear!

The legendary sources of our favorite NRL nicknames! 🐶❤️
🏁We Even Have "Favorite Referees"
If you thought naming players after our late dachshunds was elite-level fandom, it gets even deeper. My mum and I might be the only fans in the world who watch the matches with our eyes glued to the referees. Yes, we actually have "favorite refs”! But it’s a secret. 🤫
Here’s a funny story. When I attended the game (Round 27 against Melbourne in 2023 @ Suncorp), Kevvie rested most of the big names for the Finals, and I felt a bit disappointed.
Having said that, I suddenly found my favorite ref in front of me! My energy instantly shot through the roof! 🚀 I guarantee you there aren’t many NRL fans out there who get that hyped over an official! 🤣
🏟️🏔️Our Next Mission: The GIO Stadium Pilgrimage
When we attended the Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium in 2024, it didn't just fuel our passion—it also helped us find our next ultimate bucket-list goal.
By pure luck, we got to see the Canberra Raiders play their "home" game there and witnessed the famous Viking Clap. It was incredible, but it made us realize one thing: We need to experience the real thing at GIO Stadium in Canberra. That is our next big goal!
And guess what? We are already fully prepared! A friend of mine who lives in Brisbane actually sent me an official Raiders Viking helmet all the way to Japan! (Mind you, they did this knowing full well that I am a die-hard Broncos fan! That is some elite-level banter right there 🤣)

Later that same day at Magic Round, we watched the Brisbane Broncos secure a massive, thrilling win. My mum was absolutely over the moon, buzzing with energy during her very first live NRL experience.
It honestly blows my mind how a sport can bring so much joy and connection. As a mental support professional, I see how sports affect the human mind—and in my mum’s case, the NRL has completely rewired her brain for high-speed excitement and endless laughter.

Postscript: A Quick Update from Round 15! 🤣📺
Right after that Socceroos match, I ended up tuning into the final game of Round 15 by myself. It was a seriously tough and ominous battle for the Wests Tigers at first, but what a spectacular finish!
Our beloved "Johnny-chan" completely saved the day, sealing the win with a freaking HAT-TRICK!!! 😱🏆🔥 Former Bronco Jock also played his heart out. Huge applause to the boys! 👏🎉
Seeing them celebrate on screen, I couldn't help but think... the grass is definitely looking a whole lot greener on the other side of the fence right now. 😭🍏 (Meanwhile, I am quietly weeping over the Broncos' massive crisis, but hey, that's footy!) 🤷♀️💀🤣
Until next time, keep cheering, and let's go footy! 🏉☝️😎
