thanの役割

　関係代名詞の働きをするthan(『SKYWARD 総合英語』221頁等参照)と思われますが、倒置(inversion)もあり、興味深いです。

　Designs on ancient textile and stone products are more commonly found in good condition for study「古代の織物や石製品のデザインは、研究に適した良好な状態で発見されることがより多い」に、「古代のタトゥーよりも」than are ancient tattoos.と続きます。
　thanは関係代名詞としてgood conditionの代わりをしている。
　thanは、主格の関係代名詞(who, which, that)、目的格の関係代名詞(whom who, which, that)でもなく、in good conditionという副詞句の一部の代わりをする、前置詞＋関係代名詞(which)の役割を担う。

　言い換えると、Ancient tattoos are less commonly found in good condition for study than are designs on ancient textile and stone products. 主部のAncient tatoosと、述部の一部のareの位置が入れ替わり倒置になっており、are以下に続くべき、less commonly found inは省略。
