猫は柔らかく美しい毛並みを持ち、気まぐれに愛くるしい姿を見せてくれますが、何世紀にもわたって33種もの鳥類を絶滅に追いやってきた主な原因でもあります。
They may have lovely soft fur and be cute and cuddly when they feel like it, but cats have been largely responsible for the extinction of 33 bird species over many centuries.

科学者の推定によると、自由に外を歩き回る猫は、絶滅危惧種を含む数億匹（羽）もの鳥類、小型哺乳類、爬虫類、両生類を毎年殺しています。
Scientists estimate free-roaming cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians each year, including endangered species.

特に鳥類にとって、猫は極めて危険な存在です。十分に食事を与えられ、大切に飼われている猫であっても、狩りをして獲物を殺すことがあります。カナダでは毎年、飼い猫や野良猫によって数百万羽もの鳥が殺されており、一部の鳥類では個体数が最大90％も減少する事態を招いています。
Cats are particularly deadly for birds. Even well fed, pampered cats will hunt and kill. Every year, domestic and feral cats kill millions of birds in Canada, leading some bird species to decline by up to 90 per cent.

ノース・アイランド野生生物回復センター（NIWRA）に治療のため運び込まれる鳥（特に小型種）の主な原因の一つが、猫による襲撃です。猫に襲われた際、必ずしもその場で命を落とすわけではありませんが、たとえ小さな引っかき傷であっても、鳥にとっては致命傷となり得ます。猫の唾液や口の中に存在する細菌は、鳥や小動物に急速に進行する致死的な敗血症（血液中への細菌感染）を引き起こす可能性があるからです。
Cat attacks are one of the primary reasons birds, especially smaller species, are admitted to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRA) for treatment. A cat doesn’t have to kill the bird outright; even a small scratch from a cat can kill a bird. Bacteria found in the saliva and mouth of a cat can cause swift and fatal septicemia (infection in the bloodstream) in birds and small animals.

猫に捕まった鳥は、たとえ外見上は怪我をしていないように見えても、野生生物の専門家による特別な抗生物質での治療を受ける必要があります。
Birds caught by cats need to be treated with specialized antibiotics by wildlife professionals, even if they don’t appear injured.

猫を飼っている場合、どのようなことができるでしょうか？
If you have a cat, how can you help?

若いうちに避妊・去勢手術を受けさせる、野良猫に餌をやらない、決して猫を捨てない、そして地元の動物保護団体（SPCAなど）の活動を支援するといったことが挙げられます。
Spay or neuter your cat at an early age, do not feed stray cats, never abandon a cat, and support the work of your local SPCA.

ペットは室内で飼うか、屋外に出す場合は飼い主の監視下でリードにつないでおきましょう。あるいは、DIYが得意な人に頼んで、愛猫のために安全な屋外用ケージ（キャティオ）を作ってもらうのも良いでしょう。
Keep your pet inside or supervised and on a leash, if outdoors. Have someone handy build an outdoor Catio (a secure outdoor enclosure) fit for your feline royalty.

そうすることで、鳥たちの安全を守るだけでなく、ペット自身の安全も守ることにつながります。屋外を自由に歩き回る猫は、交通事故、他の猫や野生動物との喧嘩、病気など、多くの危険にさらされる恐れがあるからです。
You will be keeping birds safer, and you’ll keep your pet safer, too. Outdoor cats can be exposed to many dangers, including motor vehicles, fights with other cats and wildlife, and diseases.

また、猫を自由に歩き回らせないようにすることは、人間がトキソプラズマ症などの病気に感染するリスクを減らすことにもなります。
Keeping cats from roaming freely also reduces human exposure to diseases such as toxoplasmosis.

狩りをする飼い猫は、鳥インフルエンザに感染したり、それを広めたりする可能性があります。実際に、病気の鳥や、そうした鳥によって汚染された環境に接触したことで、H5N1ウイルスに感染した猫も確認されています。
Domestic cats that hunt can contract and spread avian flu. Some cats have been infected with the H5N1 virus after coming into contact with sick birds or their contaminated environments.

鳥インフルエンザは、飼い猫の健康に深刻な影響を及ぼす恐れがあります。
Avian flu can have severe health implications for domestic cats.

飼い主の皆様には十分な注意を払い、愛猫に何らかの体調不良の兆候が見られる場合、特に病気の鳥と接触した疑いがある場合には、直ちに獣医師の診察を受けさせてください。
Cat owners should be vigilant and seek immediate veterinary attention if their pets show any signs of illness, especially if they suspect exposure to sick birds.

猫は自分の思い通りに行動することを好む動物として知られていますが、安全な室内で飼育することは、猫自身にとっても、また鳥やその他の小さな野生動物にとっても、大きな利益となるのです。
Domestic cats do have a reputation for liking things their way, but you will be doing them and birds and other small wildlife a big favour by keeping them safe indoors.
