Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) has condemned a series of social media posts by Finns Party politicians last week.

Several prominent MPs and other politicians from the other main governing party shared pictures of themselves distorting their eyelids with their fingers, purportedly in support of the former Miss Finland. The images have been widely described as racist and offensive to people of Asian descent.

"It became childish," the premier said. He went to say that MPs should set an example of dignified behaviour and that these images were not in accordance with that.

Orpo was responding to journalists' questions about current affairs at his official residence, Kesäranta, during the traditional ‘prime minister's interview hour’ broadcast on Yle Radio Suomi.

Finns Party chair Riikka Purra, who is also deputy prime minister and finance minister, declined to comment further on the furore when asked about it during a party council meeting in Helsinki earlier on Sunday.

He praised the United States for its role, saying that the process would not be at this stage without "the world's most powerful state forcing the negotiations".

The NCP leader hailed the EU’s decision to permanently freeze Russian assets, paving the way to providing a 210-billion-euro "reparations loan" to Kyiv.
